Treeman,

Great video, and your right, the whirring is a bit in the background, but audible.  I have never heard that sound at start up. Try disconnecting the intake at the last T bolt, remove the rubber hose and see if the noise is any different. IT may also help to pin point a location. The ideas above sound likely to me as well: failing bearing, off balance impeller.

Someone who knows this car better than me: (OK OK, just about anyone :) ) What is the ECM doing differently for the first 20 seconds or so?  I think everyone would agree when starting cold, the car revs a bit higher for 20 seconds or so, the same time as Treemans noise. Perhaps some knowledge of the inner workings of what is different for that time may help lead to an answer? Is the ECM just increasing RPM's is it changing timing? does it run lean / rich?  all of this may be very unrelated, but the timing of it is very very similar.

GJ, don't think it is intake.  Put my breaker bar/stethoscope up there and no sound.  Definitely only from the impeller area.

Arabas, I know what you mean.  My first reaction was a accessory belt whine - as the belt warmed up, it went away.  That is why I did not check into it more for a few days.

It's not the compressor blades hitting the housing or you'd hear it under boost. Surprised you could hear that with the hood closed. Can you hear it only in the garage at start up? Or outside the garage with cold start up?

Yeah, I was figuring you would have a better view if you had the hose off...

It is much louder compared to the engine than in the video.  The microphone seemed to be more sensitive to the mechanical noises.  It is easy to hear, sitting in the car, hood closed, whether in the garage or not.

I keep wondering if I am making too big a deal of it.  Only happens when the car has been sitting a long time (in the morning, sometimes after work) and only lasts those 20s or so.  Drives fine.  But, given no one has heard it, if I take it in to the dealer (and have them listen to the video), they will make a note of it in case it fails prematurely later.

Treeman,

To me it sound like dry impeller bearing at start up. Here's some ways this can be caused, 1) To thick of oil being used for your morning temps. which would take longer time for the oil pump to get the oil where it needs to be. 2) You have a parcel blockage of the oil path from the oil pump to the turbo. I would check the oil supply line to the turbo. Sense you taking it to the dealer, & I'm assume it's still under warrant.  I would make sure they check & replace the oil supply & return tube if they going to replace the turbo.

What you could do is check for any shaft play of the impeller shaft. Just pull off the charge tube on the turbo. See if you can move the shaft move. They should be almost no play.  Just so other ideas to think about.

that would also be my first guess. i think u should have your turbo checked.
funny things is when i first heard the video, my mind went to those old cars.
remember how some times  old cars start whining at start up and it s that belt in the front of the engine connecting some wheels, that is loose. sorry to not post it with the right words, but i don t know how it is called...

I would definitely get it checked at the dealer ASAP!  Could be the first sign of a bad failure.  Get it on record!

Got it back from the dealer today.  The bottom line is that they don't know and have made a note about it for the record.  They kept it 2 days to listen and they had never heard anything like it (and they do a lot of Solstice work).  They called GM and GM had no record of anything like it.  I just have to be different!!  They tested the turbo's function and all is in order.  Nothing seems damaged and it does not seem to be damaging anything.  They also doubt that 20s a day is going to hurt much. I guess that depends on what's happening - but given no apparent damage - OK.  So, note made for the files and I bring it back if it gets worse.

Good news, I guess.  Mine has been making a funny whistle noise on shutdown after longer drives.  Can't figure out where it comes from.  Should probably take it in and get that documented as well...  Gotta get the A/C TSB knocked out anyway

I have always had a whistling noise on shutdown like that, followed by what sounds like a ball dropping.  Always figured it was some sort of depressurization.  Thought I read hear recently it was the fuel evap?

I guess my first question would have to be shouldn't he have two balls not just "a ball" dropping?  If he was an Indian would his name be One Nut or Whistling One Nut (WON)?

You know Treeman AKA WON is hijacking this thread but you and I are going to get blamed for it.

Does the boost gauge read vaccum? Mt throttle body on the 2.4 will make a swooshing noise right after the engine is turned off. You can watch it on the aftermarket boost gauge as the idle control or TB release engine vaccum.

Yep, could be simple as that -- pressure regulating past the closed butterfly and/or IAC valve in the throttle body.  I have my DashDAQ set up to display boost/vacuum in one gauge.  The factory DIC boost gauge does not display it.  Still, none of that explains why it only happens after a long drive (my daily commute is 50 miles each way), but not after a "short" drive that gets coolant/oil temp up to normal operating temps.

I was just reading that noises during startup can be piston slap. This would stop after it gets warmer. I wonder if the noise lasts longer as temperatures get lower and it takes the engine longer to warm up.

Well, the turbo seized yesterday. The warranty expired in March but I am going to wave the dealers documentation of this noise and their desire to just watch it under their nose and demand that it be covered,
