Painted Engine Cover
« on: September 27, 2010, 06:01:17 AM »
I am trying to decide on which way to go, Painted engine cover ( to match my Body color ) or strip it out and go with Powder covered Chrome parts from DDM. For those who have chosen to paint your covers, what type of paint did you use to hold up to the heat and since it is on a plastic type part was it special to prevent cracking due to plastic flexing over time ?

I used Caliper brake paint on mine and it held up fine. I suggest you paint your cover 1st,if you like it then keep it[Cost few bucks] If not the try a after market cover. I currently have a Dejon chrome cover that looks ok but the metal is to thin and deforms if not tightened symetrically.

i used red pinstripe tape to "fill in" where groves are on the cover..they have stuck just fine...i then used flat black engine paint, sprayed into a cup then painted the "loover" egdes so they look functional - it isn't alot of pop, but subtle and looks neat....sorry I don't have a picture

Black gloss engine paint. The stuff is thick and will cover most blemishes from the rattle can.  :)

I used standard auto paint for smartin's, mine and deedle's.   Heat resistant paint isn't required.  Use your imagination and have fun.  Post pics when you're finished.

Actually $200 for the set in polished aluminum, plus shipping.  Or $240+ if anodized (red/blue/black).  Ouch!

I used Krylon Fusion paint for plastic.  Used Chili Pepper Red and a coat of Fusion Clear on top.   Holds up well and easy to use.   I sanded with 2000 grit first so the paint would hold better.  Be sure to clean with a solvent before painting.  I cleaned many times with Acetone and Alcohol.  Be sure to use lint free rags and that all the lint/dirt is off the parts.
