Pirelli PirelliWinter 240 Sottozero Serie II tires
« on: October 04, 2010, 01:24:33 PM »
Just bought winter tires and wheels from Tire Rack.  I plan to get summer tires next spring and was a bit spooked by icy patches last winter on the stocks, so decided that, for me, it was worth it.

I got 235/50/17 PirelliWinter 240 Sottozero Serie II (http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires.jsp?tireMake=Pirelli&tireModel=Winter+240+Sottozero+Serie+II&partnum=35VR7240SZ2N0&wTire=2&autoMake=Pontiac&autoYear=2009&autoModel=Solstice&autoModClar=GXP&snowSortCode=14371&sortSize=17) on Elbrus wheels (http://www.tirerack.com/wheels/WheelCloseUpServlet?target=wheelCloseUp&wheelMake=Elbrus&wheelModel=I02&wheelFinish=Silver+Machined+w/Ice+Coating&partnum=I0215651038SDCI).  These tires seemed made for Maryland - cold, rainy winters with some ice and snow.  Perhaps not the ultimate snow performance but better wet/dry handling.  I will post a review when they have been tested by the weather.

Post up your findings. A friend has these on his CTS-V and raves about them.

"Some" is the right word.  Tires or no tires, I don't want last year's snow again!

I hope we get zero snow!  I have had more than enough! My Solstice sat for 6 weeks last year, damn near had to move in with Joe after he got 13" while I was there factory tires suck in the snow.

I thought that is why he build the shed so you would have a place to stay during the next snowfall.

I think GJ thought that the shed was for him, he was talking about getting some pink curtins for it the next time he was in town.

Alright!  It is time for my review of these tires.

Dry weather: Surprisingly good.  I have really had a blast on some back roads with these tires.  They have approximately the same dry grip as the stock GS-2s if not a little better.  They are far more predictable near the limit and there is no squirm - they just start to slide like a good tire should (cue the Winston man - never mind for you young bucks!).  They have stiffer sidewalls giving the car top notch turn in - very quick, very accurate.  Of course, the bumps crash a bit harder but, except for the past couple of weeks when my spine has been a mess, that is OK.  Not bad even with the bad back.

Wet weather:  They just do their job.  Have not had Noah's flood so don't know about deep water but they have good grip in reasonable rain.

Snowy/Icy/Slushy/DC Area gunk:  like what we got today.  Can't go autocrossing in this stuff but they do very well.  I passed a spun out Civic (new one so probably had good tires) and I was having no problems at all as long as I didn't mash the pedal or some other silly thing.  I tried those silly things in a parking lot and they do rather well but naturally there are limits in the mush.  I found them and they were predictable.  Actually, my wife in her Murano had problems coming home and I didn't.

So - these tires are doing much better than I expected in dry and what I hoped for in the foul stuff.  I am tickled pink (oh, no - pink - here comes GJ! - gotta go now!).

A friend has these on his CTS-V and loves them in Cleveland snow.

Your review sounds like mine would sound if reviewing Michelin Pilot Alpins.  :)

I got a set of 225/55-17 Firestone Winterforce. Tall, soft sidewall and lugs big enough I call them my dune buggy tires!

Great write-up!  Does anyone know the narrowest (assuming that's the best idea) tire to fit on a stock wheel?  How would just replacing the rears work?

Interesting, that was my other pick.  Did not have them in the size I was looking for.

Umm...talk about understeering!  All power and no turning.  Also reduced braking.  Does not sound like a good idea to me.

Too funny you using the blower in the dusting we got.   I had to replace the plastic body on mine after the abuse it got last year.  I was hoping they couldn't fix it, so I could pick up a 2 stage----MORE POWER
