Rotora Big Brake kits
« on: October 08, 2010, 11:58:08 PM »
I was talking with Rhys Millen at the track today, we got to talking about old Solstice parts he had left over, he has 10 sets of Rotora Big Brake Kits that were used on the TV show Setup, none of them have had much use but most likely will need new pads. I believe they are front only but include 2 piece rotors which are very light weight and 6 piston calipers. He wants to sell all of them, I will stop by his shop Monday and we will figure out a price, they are over $2000 new. I am not sure what the prices will be but he has had them collecting dust for a while. The stainless lines are included. I am picking up a set to bring back on the plane with me to get some pictures and install on my car. I will have more info Monday night. These are awesome brakes, but way out of most peoples price range at the normal price, certainly out of mine. He may have some super light Racing Hart wheels for sale too. Same wheels that were on the Red Bull Solstice.

One of our vendors has said the only real benefit to big brakes is lighter weight (unless you're racing). Our stock calipers with better brake pads are sufficient for regular drivers.

Dave from DDM and I have discussed brakes at length, bigger brakes means more friction area and less heat, all good things, do we neeed bigger brakes, most likely no, will they make a difference yes. My son has the Wilwood big brake kit on his GTO that Rhys developed, that car will stand you on your head, stops way better than my Solstice and it is a lot heavier. Rhys builds race cars for a living, kind of knows what he is doing. He is the one who designed the HKS coilovers for the Solstice. I hope he has a set of the rears he will sell they are dual caliper, one for brakes anthe other for the e-brake.

If you don't think they will help then don't buy them, lots of other ways to spend your money.

I didn't say they wouldn't help. Just as you said, that they weren't necessarily needed. Would I like a big brake kit? Sure. But I am going to buy quite a few more things for the car before that. You are right, I am finding lots of different ways to spend my money on this car. UGH!

I think we should keep this thread clean and just about the Rotora deal from Rhys. I'll start another thread for big brake arguments.

But there's already plenty of this debate on this forum and every other car forum out there.

I had coffee with Rhys Monday, the brakes would not fit in my luggage so Rhys is shipping mine to me soon. There are only 9 sets, list is $1995 new, these were used on TV maybe 500 miles at most. They are a little dusty but still look good, they are the blue color. Rhys wants $1000 a set and they will needs new pads, I have not priced the pads yet but Werks sells them as well as the entire kit, and the rear kit with no e-brake. If you are interested contact RMRproducts.com, email address and phone numbers on on the web site, this is not listed on the site, for now it is  KP only deal, I should have mine fairly soon to try them out. For those on the east coast Rhys will be in NJ November 6-7$20 t get in as many people as you can cram in a car at theNew Jersey Motorsports Park, I am sure he would be happy to talk to anyone, and it should be a very cool race http://www.njmotorsportspark.com/

I think the 4 piston are the back brakes.

I do not remember if these are the 6 or 4 caliper kit, I think they are the 4 caliper I confused them with the Wilwood kit. The picture is just one I found on the Werks website they are the predominante dealer for Rotora brakes for the Solstice. I had only a few minutes to look at the brakes, we stopped on our way to the airport and Rhys was busy bringing the car back form the race, and getting ready for the next one it was great he took time to talk with me. They are the larger rotors and they are drilled as well as slotted. This all happened kind of as a fluke, I was just asking Rhys what parts he had from his Solstice days that he maight want to get rid of. I will try and get more info. The more common kit for the Soltice is the 4 caliper kit, therer is a 6 caliper kit as well. From what I can tell the pads are about $200 for a front set.

I fixed the link for NJ, it is a Rally Cross, Rhys will be competing. He invited everyone to come, this is more like what he does when he does the Pikes Peak run, hills jumps dirt and paved track, motocross in a car basically.

By the way anyone know who Ken Block is, guess who set up his car?

Technically here in the US Rallycross is just autocross on a dirt lot...

http://www.scca.org/contentpage.aspx?content=47

EDIT: OK looked the event up and it's a regular Rally America event...when last I looked at getting into rallying anybody with a prepped car can run with these guys.

I gave up on trying rallying because it's not worth building a car when you'd only be able to race once or twice a year, if that. It's just not that popular, so there aren't many rally series here.

Kappa has the same width tire and just needs the front bias turned down as it is 1000 lbs lighter than the GTO.  :)

Actually you can put bigger tires on the Solstice, they will handle a 265 up front easily GTO won't. You can get bigger on the rear too, biggest failing of the GTO is the small rear tire space, they need more rubber on the ground.
