The Solstice Performance book has information about this. Pretty sure it's a simple install.

Thanks for starting a new thread Kenny.  To repeat, I asked DDM about doing a differential cooler and offered to pick up the CTS-V bolt-on kit (as shown in the Solstice Performance pub).  The kit runs about $1K but I hoped to pick it up somewhere for less, perhaps even used.  I figured Dave could take a look at it and rig something up for less than half that with a very sturdy attaching structure to boot.  Dave was somewhat amused at the idea but felt the market would be pretty small, and said he would want to play with it to make sure a diff cooler would even would work well on the Kappa.  I think if enough of us showed interest he might consider giving it a go.

I have to say the CTS-V diff cooler kit did not look all that different from the oil cooler kits I've seen on e-bay that looked very substantial, for approx $200.  Then again, I really don't know what I'm talking about.  Thoughts from those who do?

I'd be shocked to find out that any decently tough metal fan wouldn't fit the bill, $1k seems a bit extreme. (Overcharging just because it's for a Caddy? I don't doubt it.)

Here's a description of what the diff cooler is and what it looks like.

Quote
On a T2-legal Solstice, the rear differential will need a cooler system to control the temperature of the differential fluid during racing. This system includes an electric pump, heat exchanger, braided steel lines and electric fan

What is the difference in performance between a cooled dif. and non-cooled?

I don't think it's intended for performance so much as reliability.

Precisely what Dave of DDM wanted to quantify were he to consider going forward with such an offering.  How effective would such a cooler be?  If performance warranted he could feel good about putting the kit forward to the kappa community.  Testing might include a number of runs without the cooler and then with the cooler in order to justify, similar to the performance data he posted on the backbone and more recently on the tower brace.

I think wether it's justifiable or not will have much to do with the final price...$1k no way, could buy a better diff for that price...but for a couple hundred bucks it would be a nice "Just in case" for those who really thrash their cars.

I don't see any need whatsoever for street use or even autocrossing, this is only something that a road racer might consider. Since the performance book thought it was a good idea, if I was putting my Kappa on a road course you can bet I'd be trying to install something similar.

Would a "better" diff necessarily mean you wouldn't need the cooler on a road course?

FYI I think only limited slip diffs would need one of these.

Its a waste of money unless your driving on road racing courses. Try putting 10 laps on a 2 mile course and everything is hot hot hot. Engine will overheat 1st - You need a race radiator, brakes, then diff Its all about reliability with no performance improvement, just keeping your car intact.

The CTS-V doesn't need it and it has exhaust piping on each side.  :)

For SCCA the CTS-V uses one but we don't for HPDE we don't, even with an extra heat source emitting next too it.

I am not aware of any problems yet . There is no way to know if this is causing a problem or damage until it breaks. Since GM racing thinks you need one ,we probably should install one for track cars.

Why not get a temp probe back there on the Diff and see what it's fluid is running at first?

Does the race Solstice use the stock 3.91 diff? Surely not the 3.73 for the race car. :)
