PROBEAM INSTALL
« on: November 05, 2010, 01:23:53 PM »
Tried to install Probeam yesterday, gave up since i could not install middle nut to secure bolt
in the narrow space. it looks like i will have to drop the muffler hangers to gain room. The bolt
holes in the brace are smaller than the bolts, will have drill out. quality control ? or too much
paint ?   It does not seem like anybody else has had these problems ?javascript:void(0); any suggestions ?

Yes you have to drop the exhaust, and the bolts are bigger and stronger.

Yes the bolts are a pain to insert, but doable... Get yourself an awl to help you move brackets into place then insert the bolt, thats how I was able to get those in.... I have the RPi exhaust system and didn't need to remove or relocate the exhaust, thank God...
Good-luck!

Worst case scenario where you have to drop the exhaust all you would have to do is drop it at the rubber hangers at the rear. Really not that difficult to do. Here are instructions to drop the rear of the exhaust that I copied from the Solo web site.

"Pull down on rear of the exhaust system by the muffler. When the 4 rubber hangers stretch, squirt soapy water into the rubber where the hangers go. You could use WD40 or grease but that would not be to good for the rubbers, it starts to deteriorate them.

Using a fair size channel lock pliers, squeeze the backside of the rubber and the hanger rod. This will push the hanger knob into the rubber. Start all 4 like this. Then using a long screw driver or pry-bar take off the two front hangers (the two closest to the engine). The two rear ones are still in and will support the system while prying. From here you can actually pull the system out of the rear two hangers or pry them out."
Just trying to do my part...

D*mn!  Where were you when I was installing my hitch?!  It took me foorrrrrrevar to get those hangars off to drop the exhaust.  Those solo instructions look far easier than my trying to pry those suckers off with a large screwdriver!  :banghead:

If you are talking about the middle bolt on the frame rail, I can assure you that the ProBeam will work just fine without it. SCCA rules will not allow me to use the three bolts to attach the ProBeam to the frame rail, and it STILL works just fine. So ... if you have the two outer bolts installed, you are good to go if you don;t want to wear yourself out on that middle bolt.
