Google search not working properly?
« on: December 24, 2010, 09:27:31 AM »
If you were to do a search in Google today you would find that the results that Google generates gives you a HostGator 404 (error) page or takes you to the KappaPerformance start page.

For the URL to work you need to change the URL in your address bar and add /forum/ after the .com.

In other words:

http://www.kappaperformance.com/index.php?topic=2102.105

changes to...

http://www.kappaperformance.com/forum/index.php?topic=2102.105

This will fix it's self when Google crawls the site again but that may take a few days. Joe is putting up a custom 404 page to explain this when you experience this problem.

This transition is necessary to improve the site for all.

I use KP as my home page, that way I can always find it.

This reminds me of another Google search issue I've seen. Pre-switch, I have found often that the search results from Google are often from the archive or the print version of a thread.

This is when I do site:KappaPerformance.com <search criteria>

It still happens. Search for Porterfield and got this as a result.

Seems to be the difference between archive.php database and the index.php database for the Google search. If you change the word "archive" to "index" in your URL Kenny, it brings up the full site.

Is that folks are doing instead of the forum's search engine?  I am not thrilled with that one so maybe I will have to try this.

Yeah that works.  I'm pretty sure you can change the headers in the HTML to get google to ignore the archive and print pages when they crawl.

Think it way be related to the robot.txt file on the site.

This site has a robots.txt file to direct web search bots to the proper folders.   the problem is that the search engines cache the pages and it be a little while before they replaced with the updated ones.

Any links there were saved in posts have now been updated to the new location.  i.e. like mentioned in the first post with the /forum added.
Seach engine updates are starting to take place as well.

Kenny, archive isn't an archived version of the forum.  It's actually a "Text Version" of the forum.  If you scroll to the bottom of the page, you'll see the words "Text Version".  Each post in the text version has a link to the full version on the page.

Look for this on the link you found.  "Full Version: GM Brake Reservoir extender cap from the Solstice Performance book"

Yep I totally understand. I just thought it would be useful to somehow get google to ignore those pages instead of us having to manually change the URL or click the link to change to the normal version.

I set up the robots.txt to ignore the archive version since you can click it from within the forum.

If i use the laptop that gets internet from the same router i have no problem, only from my pc i get this message. Any opinions? Thanks in advance....

Clear your DNS Cache

http://www.tech-recipes.com/rx/233/clear_windows_dns_cache/

From the run prompt, type IPCONFIG /FLUSHDNS and press enter

Let me know if that works

Joe has been working behind the scenes on this and other issues with the site for countless hours and I would like to thank him for that. This is (was) a very visible issue but Joe has worked on many issues and improvements to the site since it's inception in December 2008. As owner/operator of the Kappa Performance forum we know that it's been a labour of love.

Joe does what he does because he loves the community and the cars that have brought us together here. Who else has 3 Kappas in the driveway that are daily drivers?

Thanks for starting the Kappa Performance forum and for everything you do here Joe.  :ghug:
