Buttress Not Releasing (Pick To Open)
« on: January 20, 2011, 10:52:02 AM »
Buttress on passenger side failed to release. It turns out the plastic cable retainer broke. Here is a pick made of 1/8'' stainless steel fish tape I fabbed to release the pin. Will keep this in the car at all times now as I'm sure the other side will fail at some point.
[ Guests cannot view attachments ]

Insert pick at this location through the buttress pin hole.
[ Guests cannot view attachments ]

Rotate the pick to this location to engage the wire holding the pin. Once in this location, pull toward the center of the car. Bingo, release.
[ Guests cannot view attachments ]

This is the wire that needs to be hooked to release the pin.
[ Guests cannot view attachments ]

From the inside. This is the ORANGE PLASTIC retainer that fails allowing the cable end to pull through the release device.
[ Guests cannot view attachments ]

This was a quick fix with a crimp on lead sinker.
[ Guests cannot view attachments ]

The orange plastic part is not available for replacement. This comes as an assembly with the cable for $90.00+.

Nice fix, and likely more permanent than the plastic part. A plastic Zip tie would also work.

Thanks for showing this for those of us who have not had this issue.

Great fix. My cable assembly broke where it tee's off to the two sides. I cut two large axle nut pins in half, netting four pins. These were heavily taped around the plastic housing and it has held perfectly for two seasons.

Great post, you should hold a tape measure up underneath your "release pull" picture in case others want to make one and get the dimensions. Now the delicate question of what are you going to call the tool?

Many other threads on this issue - though none with so much information and detail. Thanks!

There is a  GM (unofficially) "recommended" tool for this, the: KENT MOORE J-42214 HEADREST REMOVAL TOOL.  See this thread: http://www.solsticeforum.com/forum/f12/buttress-pin-wont-release-19635/

I got a used one off eBay for around $8 shipped.  It's like a small screwdriver with a thin (maybe 3/32") but stiff shaft, bent over at the end.  Haven't needed to use it, but it's there just in case :)

I would think the handle makes this much better for picking at your Butt(ress)

Naaah.  I leave it at home so it's handy when I'm out shopping and the problem occurs. :banghead:

naturally I also keep mine at home in a tool box. I would keep it in the trunk but then I couldn't get to it if I do ever need it.
