Aftermarket exterior door handles available for our cars?
« on: January 23, 2011, 01:00:17 AM »
I was at at Jeg's.com just lookin' around and noticed that Doorman has door handles, at least the drivers side that supposedly fit our car. Not looking for one at the moment and I hope I don't anytime soon but I wonder if it's just a repackaged OEM part or a different design?

slybob, GM used our style door handle on many other types of GM cars.  We can normally get the handle exterior housing from a HHR, Colbolt..etc.  The trend is painting the handle the same color as your car to for a better look if you were trying to change the chrome on the handle.

Hey Joe! Yeah I'm aware of all that. The Buick Lucerne has the same handle as well. My only point was whether or not that one at Jeg's is built better than the OEM handles. Later Kappas got better reinforced handles but perhaps, however unlikely, maybe these are better and stronger yet.

I have had my door handles, on both sides, break numerous times.  It's so annoying and I find myself being very gentle now when I open it.  It stinks that I even have to think about "how" to open my doors, but it is what it is.  The inside needs to be reinforced with some epoxy or something.  I think that's what my body guy did the last time he fixed them.

i suppose a good way to open the door is having the thumb pressing on the steady part of the handle (where the key is inserted) while the other 4 fingers are opening the handle.
at least that's what i do and mine still are in place..not sure for how long, since it seems that the good price of our car is probably a lack of quality...
sorry, i'm just so disappointed to hear all these engines failing

I find it amazing that these are so weak. I'm not particularly gentle and mine are doing OK.

Of course, now that I say that...

When the body shop had my door handles off I looked at them and they were fine.  For the last two years my Sol has been my daily driver and I get in and out multiple times a day with no problems at all and I don't pay attention to how I open my doors.   I'm wondering if there just may have been a bad batch of door handles that caused this problem or maybe I'm just naturally gentle with mine?.
Also I never lock or unlock my doors with the keys either I use the remote.
Thoughts?

tazz: I have same experience as you and I have played 8 years of volleyball and 2 years of rugby, I can say that my hands are pretty big and my pulling power is pretty high on those handles. No worries here, never heard of GT with this problem, I know I know GTs are way less than Sols or Skys

Don't know what to add, other than there seems to be a dozens of busted door handles threads.  Been told 09s were fixed (reinforced) but I'm still careful when opening ours.  Just to change the sub a little here's the coolest handles I've seen:

Definitely...when it gets really cold, I can see that handle freezing and not coming out....although who would drive a Tesla in the freezing cold anyways.

I really need to get a set to paint body color.  50k on my NA and they are somewhat loose but haven't broken yet.
