Sounds like either the hydraulic hose was not routed in the proper avenue, for it will not gravity bleed elsewhere!! Or there is a location issue with the flywheel/clutch assembly. Hmm.

On a manual (mechanical clutch vs hydraulic) clutch, if the pedal action starts real high then the clutch is adjusted too tight. Not a problem until there is some wear, and then slip will start. If the clutch action is real low, the shifting action will be bad and (you guessed it) gears will grind.

there's about 4"-6" travel between the clutch pedal and the floor right? Can't recall.....its been awhile. I have a manual POS car at the moment

doesn't have to travel all the way for clutch to engage and disengage. But I think the clutch was adjusted too tight.

It was the first time for that Saturn dealership to work on an LNF sky's clutch replacement.

I used a' brush on wipe off, thin film of anti seize on my input shaft because I wasn't willing to go into my tranny when replacing my engine. Unfortunately there is no adjustment on these. Mine is about 3" off the floor ( the honey hole) Up high you just feel the pressure of the return spring, which is there to push the pedal back up giving you a second chance to get some fluid movement if pressure is lost. Mid way is normal & ideal.
What is your dispose-a-beater, mine was a clapped out '88 Celica convertible (sweet!)

its a 2000 Saturn SC or sumthin.....

got it for $700.....w/ 160,000 miles

I drove since November.....and up to the present winter season...w/ no problems (except not starting in the morning). I have to replace the fuel pump and coolant sensor

Again the routing of the clutch slave hose to master is crucial as is the clutch pressure plate's mating surface to throw out bearing mate.(not sure how to measure that)

There is NO adjustment on our clutches. None. The SAC does the "adjusting" by keeping the pedal action the same as things wear, and when the clutch is used up, the travel will still be the same but there will be slip. On a non-SAC you have what you have, and there is NO adjusting for wear.

And THAT is the OTHER issue with non-SAC stuff. (At least for me.)

Ok, the clutch hose needs to be routed above the rubber boot for the steering column & also above the grommet for the hood release cables. If not it will be very difficult or impossible to bleed properly. Its easy to not do it this way, so keep this in mind when going back together.

I have been running a Fidanza flywheel and spec 3 clutch mostly on road racing courses last year. So far everything has worked well. I put 500miles on new engine and clutch before I started racing it. Talked with the guys from spec at SEMA show this year and they seem to be a good group of guys.

Just to make sure that it is clear, the Fidanza flywheel will only accept STOCK (self adjusting clutch / SAC) style clutches and pressure plates. And, it has a replaceable friction surface so not machining required if worn or hot spotted.

so how was Tom (graywolf) able to use Fidanza FW on his spec stage 3? I got confused there!

also, The advantage of the Fidanza will be.....it will be cheaper to replace that friction surface VS replacing the whole spec FW

But in regards to getting into it........it will be the same 9 hour labor fee of regular clutch job if I replace my spec FW, dont you think?

Reason why I got the non-SAC, which SPEC specified:

This package converts the restrictive and vague factory SAC type pressure plate to a SPEC exclusive billet 360 degree pivot unit with higher load/rpm ability, better drivability and longer life than can be achieved with a modified factory design.

UPDATE:

I just talked to SPEC and they told me that hot spots on the FW could be normal or abnormal.

They need me to send photos of the flywheel, and both sides of the disc and pressure plates.

Then they'll be able to let me know what's going on.

I will not get my stuff from cryo-treatment til tomorrow.....then I'll take photos to send them.

Until then....we're still on stand still.

Also, SPEC stated the the FW also has a replaceable surface..............

Hey 888, since the car has been apart for a while, another week or two won't hurt. Send the stuff back to them to inspect !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Cameras DO lie. If people look at pics of mechanical parts, lighting DOES make a difference, but if they have the parts IN THEIR HANDS ......................

edit --- just saw the pics. Send in the stuff. They need to see AND feel the surfaces as well as the surface of the clutch as well. If you send ALL THREE PIECES to them, they can also measure everything as well.

SOB, actually the problem is at the shop. They want this finished ASAP, since there are other projects waiting. They only have one lift......and I can't afford any delays for my project. All my sponsors are also bugging me and asking for updates and stuff. I personally already waited long enough, and I can't wait too....lol

Shipping back and forth the the flywheel/etc will just cause me the same money such as buying a new friction surface ($70-90).
