Help - GXP Check engine code P0016 and P0017
« on: March 02, 2011, 01:38:34 PM »
Ok,

I need help from all of you smart Solstice junkies.

My check engine light came on this morning on my GXP and I have 4 codes in the following order:

1. P0016 Crankshaft Position-Intake Camshaft Position Correlation
2. P0017 Crankshaft Position-Exhaust Camshaft Position Correlation
3. P0016 Crankshaft Position-Intake Camshaft Position Correlation
4. P0017 Crankshaft Position-Exhaust Camshaft Position Correlation

I have done nothing new to the engine or intake yet and changed my oil last week.  I have the GMPP software and sensor upgrade, which I have had install for a couple of years now.

I have 65k + miles on it and have not had any problems and I hate going to a dealer.

Any ideas on what I can try to fix this my self or am I at the mercy of the dealership.

Thanks,
Derek

I'm not sure if that was the same codes that Elff was seeing but they soldered the wires to the GMPP sensors to fix it.

DRM, since you have the GMPP and haven't done any more modes to your Sol, i suggest you let the dealer deal with it.
if you get some feedback from the guys here for what it could be, then you could let the dealer know what they should check first

I did forget to mention that I do have the K&N drop in oil air filter.  I bought a can of MAF cleaner and will clean the MAF off tonight.

Also the nipple on the Air intake broke off last week and I glued it back on.  This is one reason that I ordered the K&N Typhoon CAI, because the nipple on the intake tube is metal....Plus I think this CAI look cool.

So far based off of info you all have supplied me I am going to do the following tonight:
1. Check the GMPP sensor wires...which I think are fine.
2. Clean the MAF sensor.
3. Replace the CAMS Position sensors...The Intake and Exhaust..I don't think it would hurt to do this anyway.

If you're not out of warranty, I would take it in.  Replacing a senor that reports the timing is out (possible) won't fix a timing issue.

I'd do the simple things first.  Clean the MAF and MAP sensors and reset the codes.  If they come back, take it in.

Being both cams show to be out of phase  I would suspect the crank sensor. Its next to the oil pressure sensor above the starter towards the back. I second taking it to the dealer. It should be an easy diagnosis.

I tried the following:

1. Checked the GMPP sensor wires and all looks good.
2. Clean the MAF and MAP sensors.  Cleared the codes and went for a drive.  Parked and turned the car off then on.  The check engine light reappeared.

So I guess its off to a dealer.

A couple of more questions:

1. Should I remove the top of the DDMWorks cross brace before going to the dealer...for better engine access?

2. Should I wait before putting on the K&N typhoon CAI?  I just can't wait to install it and I am concerned that the Service Department might give me a hard time about it.

am I crazy or do I remember some folks having to to a crank shaft pos. sensor relearn?  Or was that something else?  After a dead battery or something?  Could it be a low battery causing bad info?

Someone who remembers the CPS relearn chime in?

I killed my battery 4-5 times until now, no issues what so ever, jump start it without any issues.

The only issue which I have every time I forget about my alarm system and every time I connect the cables to jump start it the alarm goes on and scares the sh!t out of me because the secondary bugle is right under the battery.

I am very nervous right now.... I took the car to the dealership that install my GMPP tune, which went well.  I have not delt with this dealer for anything else.  I just haven't found one I can trust yet.  Hope this dealer is a winner.  The dealer that I trusted and who I bought my Solstice from went out of business.

Fingers Crossed.

The dealership started on the car late and don't know what is causing the codes yet.  They are keeping the car over night....Ugh...

This is my 100th post on this forum.....One bright spot today...

I am taking a Deep Breath right now....

The dealership just called.  Deep Breath...

They have their Corvette tech working on my Beloved Solstice.

They do not believe this is a sensor issue.  They believe it is an Internal Mechanical Failure in the Engine that they believe will be covered under warranty.....Deep Breath....

It sounded like they will need to remove and or take the engine apart to find the problem.

So, the dealership is getting me a rental car for a few days.

release through the mouth

This is one of the things that just makes me worry about doing upgrades to our cars.

Then I figured
FAWK IT
If I blow my shit up, I will rebuild it stronger and better

Good luck with everything.  Sounds like you are being taken care of properly and for free.

Might as well build them up, as they are breaking anyway.  If you rebuild it will be stronger than factory.  If they rebuild you have the same $H!T on rebuilt.
