Disabling OnStar - Need Access to VCIM
« on: March 17, 2011, 09:15:04 PM »
I'm trying to get access to VCIM to disable OnStar.  I managed to get the panel by the parking brake lever off, that one was easy.  I could see the VCIM module but I couldn't get to it.  Can anyone help me with removal of the huge panel behind the seats ?

Also, where is the OnStar antenna ?

Thanks :)

Unclip Sills, unclip rear 3/4 panels, unclip waterfall panel.  See: http://www.kappaperformance.com/forum/index.php/topic,2450.0.html and scroll down to the photos.

(Warning, you may have a couple of screws on the rear wall of the center rear cubby.  Remove those first, but you WILL lose the nuts behind the wall when you do.)

Argh, more involved than I thought.  I'll have to do this out of the garage and definitely not under the lift.  I saw at least one of the OnStar antenna connectors on the VCIM in one of the pictures.  Hopefully I don't need to remove the seats to get access to the VCIM.

Thank you.

this is quite easy...but may take u about 30 mins...remove your console cover first...then proceed with the door sills...then remove the 3 panels behind your seat...u do not have to remove seats...u will have 3 screws holding down your VCIM...but if all u want to do is disable ON STAR...u will not have to remove those screws...just take out the cable.

No, don't need to remove the seats.  Just slide 'em forward.  Just be careful when unclipping the 3/4 panels... use a panel-puller to lever them out so you dont separate the inner shell from the outer at the top.  Also check and count the clips on the big panel when you unclip it - they can come off and either get lost, stay in the rear wall and/or shoot off into some dark corner of your garage (go on, ask me how I know :) )

I make it sound more difficult than it is really.  Just be careful and you'll have it out in 10-15 mins.

POS VETT ; All of those pictures were Part of Installing Sound deadener in the complete cabin . You can move seats all the way forward and tilt Backs forward to gain access to waterfalls. youhave to pull the concole cover off also just put fingers under front Lift and work foward over Brake lever. then your there. Not as hard as it looks.   :drive:   on down         " Come to the Mods Meet 8 " and work with us there.

I'm trying to get access to VCIM to disable OnStar.

Wouldn't it be easier to just disconnect the antenna in the rear deck lid? You could replace the sharkfin with the emblem of your choice.

(Image removed from quote.)

This does not disable On Star...it just loses reception.  It's like taking your antenna off from your radio....u still have your radio...just not clear reception.

Ok, slide the seats forward.  I'm not going to take out the VCIM, the car won't start without it, yep, learned it first hand with the Corvette  :banghead:  I just need to leave one connector plugged in.  I'll do it the hard way, unplug one by one until the car won't start

I'm going to yank that wart-of-shame out as well, it's in my list.  Would another arrow head cover the holes or does it need something wider ?

Am thinking OnStar couldn't do much of anything without satellite reception?

There's 2 small holes in the decklid. Larger one about 1/2" wide with another about 1/4" a little below it. An arrowhead should work just fine.
