RUST
« on: March 24, 2011, 12:48:03 PM »
Last week I installed the new Rotors that I baked the previous week.  :D

When I started to remove the OLD (<2YO, 25K miles) Rotors that have only been driven in the rain never snow or ice, I had to use PB Blaster to get them loose.  The Rust on the hub and back of the Rotor was much more that I expected.  I had to use a soft faced BFH to get them off.  :banghead:

QUESTIONS:
1. Have anyone else experienced this?  :idk:

2. What can I do to stop this from happening in the future?

Put a very thin coating of anti-seize compound on the interacting surfaces.

I had to smash the crap out of my rotors with a rubber mallet to get them off. Pretty sure that is normal.

Rust is what holds my jeep together.   Who needs bolts????
 :idk:

This is normal
Hell, when I went to rotate my tires, the centering rings on the OZ's were stuck to the rotors.
I normally need a hammer to assist as well.  Nothing to sweat about.
This does make the plated rotors DDM sells all that much nicer.

Antiseize is your friend, but even it has its limitations.

WHY:  The aluminum rims are mounted to bare steel hub and rotor which makes for some seriouse galvanic corrosion.  Compound that with brake dust, it rusts or siezes together.  When trying to remove the the wheels, sometimes they feel like the won't come off.  Rotor had to be beat off too.

Solution: I coated the inside of my wheels around the hub with Lithium grease.  and painted the "top hats" of the rotors.  Everytime I rotate the wheels, I clean them and recoat.  No problems since.

Neh,

Last week, had to take a can of lithium spray lube to a PTO drive shaft slip ring locking latch on the 42 inch power tiller.

Our rotors rust badly, just take a look at the after a rain, before you drive off, and that surface rust is just from the time it has been standing.  Now add that to everyday you have own the car and the answer is a BFH

Rusty rotors are as common as mice. Just was working on a friends 88 BMW 325 which had new rotors installed a year ago. Guess what? Three needed help to remove. Anything with iron in it will rust to some degree, and adding heat and dissimilar metals creates the perfect storm for corrosion.

This makes me want to pull off all 4 rotors and apply some anti-seize.

There are a number of similar products out there, such as Eastwood's Rust Encapsulator.  They're all basically Naval Jelly (phosphoric acid) + a primer.  Be interesting to see how it holds up on rotors though - let us know.

A light smear of antiseize as pos vette said will do the trick. Phosphoric acid works best if followed with a light film of oil. Like seasoning an iron skillet.

Thinking about Naval Rust Inhibitor. Turns Carbon Steel Black and stops the galvanic and general corrosion. Not too sure if it would hold it up the heat though.

Would be an interesting experiment just before my brakes upgrade to seeif it would work.

Speaking of RUST
Swapping bumpers on the jeep turned into a nightmare.
total of 12 bolts 6 on the frame, 4 holding the winch to the winchplate. 3 of the frame ones snapped, of the winch ones snapped all 10 required heat and loads of pb blaster.
We eventually had to weld nuts onto the broken studs to extract them.   :banghead:
20 minutes turned into 3 hrs.    :gaah:
What a Pita, and these were installed with antiseize.  Just 6 years of use
