Electric door locks - not working......FIXED
« on: May 12, 2011, 08:55:36 AM »
It finally penetrated my thick skull that my doors are unlocked when I walk up to my car.  It has only been a couple of days, and I always hit the button on the remote as I approached the car so I didn't think anything of it.  The horn beeps like it is locking and the alarm works if you try and open a door but the locks do not lock or unlock when you shut the car off.  Locks do not lock when you drive away either.

Possible causes:

Wear on the wire harness where it is attached to the VDI hinge
Blown fuse (see above)

Any ideas where to start looking after I check the wiring on the hinge?

If BOTH locks are not working and yet the fuse is OK, It would indicate something at the BCM.  Maybe try re-seating the big-ass C3 connector?

Unlikely to be the VDI's if both have gone together - a bit coincidental.  However if the fuse HAS blown, then I agree, check the wiring at the hinges.

Also check the relays on the BCM.  Reseat and/or check for operation.  I'm sure you have this but attached is the door lock wiring diagram (from 2006, but matches my 2008, with the exception of the remote lock receiver on the top right):

Thanks for the diagram, will try and make heads or tails of it, electricity and I aren't good friends.  I haven't checked anything yet, just figured it out they were not working this am and was thinking out loud.  Somewhere in the dark recessess of my mind this little voice says that they are both controlled from the drivers door, even without the manual unlock feature.  Fuse 26 and the wiring I can look at at lunch today.

Did JPM do your doors completely?

Got it.  Where mine were inserts and outserts, my power lock button sticks every once and a while causing weird lock actions.  Something you may want to check anyway.  Knowing you, it could just be some dirt stuck in there!

Fuse was blown, took a quick look at the wiring and didn't see anything closed the door, hit the button and the doors locked, got something to eat came out and hit the button....................nothing

Definitely have a short will just have to find it, my guess is the wire bundle on the driver's door hinge.  I will have to look closer.

the BCM number that controls the electric door locks r 16 and 17 respectively...I cannot believe that would be the problem, although anything and everything is possible, but not probable...those micro 64 connectors that go into the BCM...well, once they r in, they fit snugly.  Given all that info, when u take your door panel off, it may be the contacts on your switch...the bad news with that is...they r plastic melted on for adhesion...but I believe u can take off the switch by itself...cannot recall.  I doubt it is any fuses since they r either 20 or 30 amps...they can hold plenty of juice.  You should be able to resolve this easily.  I am pretty savy on this topic only because I installed the door lock switch on my car...it is a 2006 early build and did not come with them...I have them installed on my passenger side only now.

The wire harness was being pinched by the hinge and the back brace of my custom fender.  I tore the harness apart pull all the wires apart and fixed 3 wires that were exposed.  Wrapped them in electric tape, wrapped the entire bundle in electric tape, and the the cor ragated plastic tube in electric tape.  Reattached the bundle to the hinge and tested.

Still very tight in there I am going to have to take a rat tail file to the back fender brace to give myself a couple of millimeters of space.  No sense asking for pictures, because I didn't take a camera out with me.  If you are really that interested I will show you at the mod meet.

I'm thinking someone slipped up on the supervision.  Hmmmm.

Glad to hear this was not a larger issue and you were able to find all the wiring issues at the same time. Would have hated for you to be driving down the road and have random things happening to your car due to chaffed wiring. I look forward to seeing this at the MM, just for informational purposes.
