My turbo cover is coated and ready to go
« on: April 25, 2011, 11:11:13 PM »
I know that there has been some discussion about this in the past but I got my turbo cover coated with hi heat powder and is all ready to go. The powder coater did a great job and I am SO looking forward to installing it on the car. The cost because of all the prep time involved is $75.

Yeah as I mentioned it's hi heat powder and it should hold up. If not I'll redo it in ceramic. Time will tell.

The part was sand blasted before coating and the silver was laid down first with a mask. After that was baked on the silver was masked and the wrinkle black was coated and baked. Hi heat powder as with ceramic coating can only be put down in one layer and a thin layer at that. If he would have done the wrinkle black and put the silver over top the silver would have peeled over time when subjected to the heat.

Hi temperature powders also have a short shelf life and if it's old and it's used to coat the part, it'll likely peel over time. He bought fresh powder for this job.

Hi temperature powder can withstand temperatures to 1000 degrees. The cover doesn't get that hot with the air space between it and the turbo. Steel glows red in daylight at 975 degrees Fahrenheit. It's a LONG way from that temperature.

Will it stay on? See you at the mod meet!   :D

Bob, just a question. did you leave the bottom side unpainted?
it would be good to leave it stock to be able to "show" you signs of any possible fume leaks..

These pictures were sent to me last night from the powder coater but I haven't actually picked it up yet. He took the pictures to post on his site, Facebook and the trades sites that he frequents. I can't say whether he coated the bottom. I told him not to worry about it but didn't specifically tell him not to. The wrinkle black is shiny so soot from a leaky turbo would show up on it anyway.

Here's his Facebook site with more pictures.

Looks really good!

Your heatshield looks a lot smoother than mine too... I assume they didn't fill/smooth anything?  Mine has a couple of slight dings and creases in the larger curved area :(

Thanks, no they didn't fill anything as it was in really good shape. I know that the powder will stand the heat but short of welding and grinding I don't know that any filler would.

As far as costs goes Arabas, I'll let ya' know when I get the bill.   :D

Talked to Don and it costs $75 to have this done to a turbo cover. Lots of prep time because of the masking involved. I have updated the op with the price.

Dang!  Joe's gonna have to rent a auto display turntable for MMM8 just so you can display your car and all its mods to the drooling plebians (of which, of course, I am one)!

Thanks TomatoSoup, I appreciate the compliment. Trying really hard to keep up with some folks here but I think I'm falling behind rather quickly.

That cover is a thing of beauty Bob!  That makes my stock piece of crap, dusty aluminum one look horrible!  I hope your gamble pays off and the powder stays put, it would be a shame to have that piece of art slowly fade away.  I can't wait to see that mounted.

Looks great, Bob.  I'm sure you're anxious to see what it looks like installed, as are all of us.  Be sure to post some photos once it's on the car.
