WTB: solstice front nose
« on: May 07, 2011, 01:42:51 AM »
I am looking to see if anyone has their stock front bumper assembly.  Maybe you replaced yours with something nice from Norm?  In order of preference:

GXP in Deep
LE5 in Deep
GXP in any other color
LE5 in any other color.

If anyone has one available, or is thinking of getting a new style, please let me know.

Also, does anyone know how / if the plastic the bumpers are made of is repairable?  Can you attach fiberglass to it to repair a section?

Thanks,
GJ

Check Wade's Garage in West Virginia, they sell the SolBra and replace the front end on all their conversions.

Plastic bumpers are repairable, depending on the amount of damage.  Body shops have special flexible filler plus the experts can apply heat to get out creases etc.

A few years ago (actually about 10!) I had an 18-wheeler slow-shunt my Audi at a stoplight - he couldn't see my car over his hood!  Creased up the rear bumper and tore some paint.  Local body shop repaired it like new!  I'm picky and even I was satisfied  (of course YMMV).

Tried them once already.  Will check back again.

I just checked Ebay and there are 12 OEM front bumper covers listed as available. We got a spare from Ebay about a year ago to keep on hand "just in case" and we were quite happy with the transaction.

GJ - Per the second part of your initial post....the plastic is repairable, however you should not try to bond fiberglass to it. The fiberglass resins cure as a rigid panel and the flexing of the oem part would cause it to break loose from the repair area.

Rouge,
What can you use?  There is a piece missing at the corner near the wheel.  Got to see if a good shop can fix, otherwise, it's buy a replacement.  Just seems a shame to replace when 99 percent is great!  Will keep as a spare just in case.

If the missing area is small enough, you can use a backer and fill in with a 2 part repair resin. The backer allows it to keep it's shape long enough to cure. Then it's just a matter of sanding and finishing 'til it's ready to paint. The resins are available from companys like 3M and Fusor. You may be able to buy them at a local NAPA or auto paint supplier. Don't be surprised if you find you'll need some special tools to make it all work...which will put the repair cost beyond the replacement cost. However, if it is just a small tear or gouge you might be able to do the repair with a 2 part flexible filler....sort of a bondo for plastic. It really depends on the size of the repair area. That is what I used to repair a small gouge on Pat's GXPsy 2 years ago and so far it has held up well.

I'm not sure I stated that as clearly as I meant to. If the repair area is small, you can use a repair resin...a two part, requiring special tools. If the repair area is akin to a parking lot bump or door ding, then you can use a special flexible "bondo" like filler. Otherwise, epxect a replacement bumper cover to be your best option.
