CARFAX issue
« on: May 10, 2011, 10:47:45 PM »
Hey all, I just wanted to let you know of an issue that I'd hate to see happen to others...

I had a CARFAX report done to help sell my Sky.  When I got the report, I was SHOCKED to see that there was no record of service from when I took ownership of the car at 19 miles and a service at a Chevrolet dealership at 22,314 miles!!!!  Because of this, the buyer is attempting to low-ball me.  I've called the dealership (now selling Volkswagons) and they will be faxing me all paperwork they still have on file tomorrow...hopefully this can salvage my asking price.  :banghead:

Moral of the story: before you list a CARFAX report, make sure it is 100% correct!!

Another reason why I keep all copies of the paperwork on anything that was done on my Sol.  Thanks for the heads-up, Van.  I'm sure this came as a big surprise to you and that others will benefit from your post.

As far as I know nothing says a place has to report anything to Carfax but could be wrong.  Insurance companies and dealers usually do for accidents and the like but not really for general service records that's really the owners responsibility and one should not think differently.  Not saying some don't just they they really don't need to for general service records.  In addition all those records are not added right after the incident happens either since there could actually be a delay of months if not years before it shows up.
It's a good tool to use but not going to be 100% correct either since people still imput the data.   I think Carfax will update the data as long as it's verifiable though.

Carfax and another VIN check company don't have anything listed for my vehicle other than In service date and original miles service date.

I never thought car fax was a maintenance history service.  It reports DMV info, that's about it as far as I know.  Just like the info Tazz found on his.

Edit: from car fax site

Every CARFAX Vehicle History Reportâ„¢ checks for:

Title Problems
Severe Accident?
Lemon?
Flooded?
Odometer Problems?
Ownership History
How Many Owners?
High Mileage?
Rental?
Fleet Car?
Accidents & Service
Total Loss?
Airbags Deployed?
Frame Damage?
Service Records?
Make the right choices now

CarFax DOES list whatever info shops and dealerships report to them. Seen it on some vans that the KC SCCA Region was looking to buy. Fleet operators are pretty good about reporting as are bigger chain dealerships.

I was always under the impression the only thing Carfax was good for was insurance claims.  BTW, your asking price should be based on similar vehicles +  a little negotiating room.  Then stick to it, because sooner or later someone will eventually come along.  You'll always get your fair share of tire kickers selling any car.
When I've sold my vehicles, I always make an original copy that shows a pic, list the year, miles, options, and any items that have been added to the car, plus a general service history (oil changes every 3 thousand miles), and then the asking price.  I also make sure it's always clean.  I then make copies and stick them under the windshield wiper.  Tire kickers take copies, serious parties actually call.  And I never take anyone for a ride unless I believe that they are genuinely interested.  But most of all I try to remain patient.

The fact that your Carfax report shows no accident damage is a plus for you. Insurance companies report claim info pretty aggressively. The lack of any reported claims is a good thing. Routine maintenance is not something I would be looking for on a Carfax. Your prospective buyer should be comfortable knowing you are not trying to stick him with a problem car.

Talked to the shop Mrg today and asked him if they report anything to Carfax and he said NO not really.  He said they use Carfax as a selling tool but do not contribute information to it and that they leave that to the Insurance Companies.  Said that there was no law stating they had to so they don't but will assist in getting any info to the insurance company to send to Carfax so they choose not too but also said that they could if they wanted too.
Just like anything you probably should check every so often to make sure the info is accurate just like your credit score since you might find inaccurate or omitted info on the report.  A good report but gotta know it limitation and realize the burden still falls on you to mantain proper records.

Yeah, that's what I'm trying to tell him.  But he wants to see ALL maintenance because "new cars always have problems".  Now he is saying that because of the leather stretching on the seat he wants $1,000 off the car because he will have to buy seat covers.  Whatever.

tell them to GTFO and DIAF.  i turned away numerous of these lowballing tirekickers when i was trying to sell my 'vert last year.  they're not worth wasting your time on.  even if you "need" to sell - they won't come through in the end.  kindly direct them to the nearest dealership and tell them to be sure to use the same negotiating tactics.  you'll feel better for acting childish too - at least i did anyway

THIS buyer is going to be problems long after he pays even the reduced price. Tell him you do not wish to do business with him and wait for the next one.

He will pick on every tiny perceived defect until you want to beat him.

Time to find another buyer.
I run into that crap all the time selling parts in the Jeep world.
Had one A-hole show up $40 short on something we had agreed to on a price.
He said that's all the cash he brought, I told him as soon as he finds the remaining $40 he can have the parts.

God I hate Cheap Ass people.

Have the Dealership provide you a copy of the Vehicle History Report from GM, that should list all Maintainance/Service record completed at GM Dealerships.  Car Fax is limited on those type of records, but service performed at any GM dealership, is usually on these service records. If you need help, PM me your VIN and email.

Do you have On-star?  I bought my Sky used with 36,000 miles on it back in November of 2009 and kept On-star.  A few weeks ago I decided to do a mileage and oil history check for the past year and much to my surprise, it went all the way back to when the car was first put into service in 2008. It showed the average daily mileage per month as well as the oil life history which also showed when the oil was changed, etc.
