Additional 12V outlet and/or USB charging outlet
« on: May 11, 2011, 11:04:07 PM »
Would like to add an extra 12V outlet to my Sol, and maybe a USB "outlet" for power as well.  What's the best spot?  Any hardware "best" for this for factory installed appearance?
Any dos and don'ts?

You could try something like this:

http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Lenmar+-+Dual+USB+Vehicle+Charger/2554009.p?id=1218335741588&skuId=2554009&st=usb charger&cp=3&lp=14

I have a smaller version from another company, but I did find it best buy...

Remember, he wants FACTORY LOOK APPEARANCE...and that is just a charger...with the radio, it is OEM and u can use it for anything and everything.

I know what he said and he didn't say he wanted to replace his radio either.  He did, however, say that he's looking for extra power.  I was just giving him an easier and cheaper alternative...

My cell phone charger has a USB slot on top of it so I can charge my phone and run my GPS. You can get a lot of configurations to fit your needs that way, or one of these:

2k4u installed a second power supply up under the dash on the passenger side of my car.  It hangs below the dash but unless you know it is there you can't even see it.  There may be a write up on here somewhere.

On a similar note to Critter's, Goat installed one in the vertical panel on the left side of the passenger footwell.  Drilled a 1" or so hole in the panel and mounted flush.  If I can find a link I'll post it.  I'm thinking of doing the same thing myself at some point.

Once you have the cig-lighter type socket, I'd go with a shallow USB power adapter like the others mention.  You can swap it in or out as required.

UPDATE:  Can't find Goat's post, but this is the type of thing I mean (I've seen simpler versions at Walmart without the wire):

That is where we where going to mount mine, but could not find anywhere deep enough for a cigarette type socket.

Thanks guys.  I do need another 12v as much as the USB.  Maybe hanging one like Critter's and a dual USB insert would work.   I have a Bluetooth-aux converter that "uses up" the main 12v plug, I'd like another one for charging that is either factory looking or well hidden.

Don't want to do the whole radio swap, if I pull the dash out again, I'm gonna add a touchscreen gps radio rear camera etc.     But not now
