Custom Ultragauge mount
« on: May 16, 2011, 05:17:51 PM »
As requested... some pics of my new custom Ultragauge (UG) mount bracket.  This utilises an idea I saw on the UG forums, where the UG is velcro'd onto a flat panel with rubber 'bumpers' behind the buttons.  This allows you to select MENU, UP and DOWN by just pressing on the front of the UG at the top left, top right or bottom right corners.  No more scrabbling to feel-for and find the buttons round the back!

I made a bracket out of aluminium sheet, cut and bent to suit.  The bracket mounts to the right of the top steering column cover molding, plus there's a hole cut in the cover where the Ultragauge strain-relief and wire fits in to it.  This both allows the UG to be mounted close up to the steering column and also hides the wire too. Unfortunately, I first drilled this hole too close to the dash and the bracket didn't have enough clearance from the gauge cluster rings, so I had to rat-tail file it forward until the fitting was right.  Made a real c*ck-up of it, :banghead: but fortunately the UG hides the mess when in place.  (I have a spare top cover that I got from ICS, so I can always go back to 'stock'.)

So, pictures... didn't take many in mid-fab (I wasn't going to take any), but here's one with the bracket test-fitted, screws not blacked and no rubber bumpers or velcro (excuse the dust & muck):

[ Guests cannot view attachments ]

Here's one in final mount state with all of the above, again excuse the dust:

[ Guests cannot view attachments ]

Everything put together with the wire and strain relief tucked into the column cover:

[ Guests cannot view attachments ]

Flash photo from the side (great readability on these UG's, even in bright sun):

[ Guests cannot view attachments ]

... and finally from the driver's perspective:

[ Guests cannot view attachments ]

Now get out there and create your own!

Wow, one of the best mounts for Kappa, is simple, mounts the gauge in a visible area, doesn't cover other things, doesn't destroy stock interior parts, the gauge is nice and cheap.

HELL will be even proper for me cause I'm so tall and I have the view from top.

Congrats Soup, your topic convinced me to buy UG!

P.S. Whatta are you doing with so many MPG values? Kappa was supposed to go fast not cheap

So this UG seems to me to be the direct replacement for the DashHwak that wewnt out of production and support years ago. Anyone do a comparison yet of the two? Just wondering. DH replacement with a TS bracket? Possibly!

So how much for your super wambadine bracket TS? Given any thought to mass production? Or like the LV Brace, limited production based on demand?

You are such a good salesman for the UG you can't leave us hanging without a proper mounting bracket, now can you?

Mounted mine on the left vent and it works like a charm. I wanted to know the voltage output and temp. because of some of the known problems. Yes, the temp is in the monitor, but who wants to scan for all those values. I, also look at timing, outside temp, manifold temp and manifold pressure. Takes a little getting use to pressure rather than other boost values. Wire can go in vent and exit via a small hold in tube to ALDL. Saw a dashhawk on another's car and it looked good, but don't know anything about what it could display. Paid $50.00 with a rebate about a year ago. I put a hat on the dash to hide it in public.

No BOOST??? Did I miss it? This would definitely be a killer for me. I definitely need a boost gauge soon... DH does... So does DashDAQ.

S'okay, yoush just been drinken GJ's lickuuur...  see list item: "Intake Manifold Absolute Pressure (PSI)" near the top.

HOWEVER, just because it's there, doesn't mean it's useable.  The downside to the UltraGauge (and probably why/because it's so cheap) is that the scan period is only once per second for all displayed values.  So for RPM and boost, it's not really useful - too much delay.  For everything else, even MPH, it's just fine though.

That was the tidbit of information that is the most useful right there... Back to AEM or PLX gauges or DH/DDQ

What I do is have the boost displayed on the DIC and use the UG for everything else.

You have it displayed on your WHAT?

CT believe me when I tell you that when you mash your foot to the floor you aren't going to have time to be looking at gauges.

I display Boost on my Dashhawk which is mounted just like DBG's in the tachometer hole. It also acts as my secondary Speedometer and Tach.

I agree with you Critter that very soon I will not be able to stare at the Dashhawk, but that is why I have it set up for shift points to change colors/flash/etc to keep me from blowing up Lindsey.

TS, this is a very informative thread. I applaud ALL your efforts with our cars and for allowing your thread to be slightly derailed with this discussion.
