Display Message "reduced motor power"
« on: May 30, 2011, 01:38:57 PM »
Hey all,
last week we spent some days in the mountains and had some fun with the Opel GT's in the dolomites in Italy.
The roads in the dolomites have a lot of serpentines and it's all way long (5-10 miles) a constant climbing up the hill with 20-35 serpentines going up to 12% per 100 ft.

Now after some serpentines and several "full throttle, full braking and accelerating" again i got an error message in the display : "reduced motor power". (translated from german)

With this error message the motor felt like having only 20-30 hp and you had to stop and let it cool down. The motor temperature was below 210 °F(100 °C) tho.

Anyone an idea what this could be?

I'm a bit concerned if this might be a gearbox temperature sensor. Do we have something like that?

I had no chance to read the OBD-port  so i'm clueless at the moment.  :idk:

Thank you all for your ideas.

Pulling codes will help with the trouble shooting.  IBDrinken is correct though.  This is a fail safe to protect the engine.
You are probably not getting more than getting 5psi of boost at Max [Sorry, I don't know what the KPA translation for that]

First thing is to check all your hoses and retighten them.  The stock worm clamps tend to loosen up and leak.
Most people, especially those of us with higher boost have replaced them with T-Bolt style clamps.

Keep us informed and we will do what we can to help

I know back in the day when mine would go into limp mode it was because oil from the airfilter if your running one would make the maf sensor fail..

Ah ok, it's "limp mode". Didn't know the correct translation.

Wouldn't your above described reasons cause a permanent limp mode?

5 mins of waiting solved the problem tho

I'll check the rest anyway tho.

The reason it corrects itself in 5 minutes or so is because of the self protection of the ECM.
If you have a standard AIR box it is a MUST you take the plastic hose that connects it to the turbo.
Please check to make sure you have no oil in it. If you do you need to clean the MAF.
Also when you put it back together make sure is seal against the edge on both side and tighten the clamp as much as you can without striping it.
Also as has been said check the rest of your hose connections.
Also was there any heavy rain or water you drove through in the mountains?.
Some times water vapor will get into the intake and will make the car go into limp mode.

That happened to me driving to the nationals in Canton Ohio.
The drive was through 4 hrs of a torrential downpour.
At one point when I went to hit the gas,
Limp mode.

Once I got to Canton, it was sunny.  I reset the code and haven't had one since.
