Cleaning the painted part of our chrome wheels.
« on: July 05, 2011, 09:32:44 AM »
Hi, had my wheels off the other day and decided it would be good time to clean the tar and dirt off the wheels behind the chrome spokes.  After significant scrubbing with a terry cloth towel soaked with bug/tar remover I was able to get most of the tar and crap off the wheel.  But it appears I have also removed some of the grey paint too!  I now have spots down to the aluminum.  I'm trying to decide whether to clean off all the grey paint and clear coat the aluminum or just put a coat of grey back on the wheels.

If you have run into this issue, what did you do and why?

Thanks,

Tim.
Tim.

Actually it is chrome back there that has been painted over for some reason.  Several people have clean all the paint off, polish and sealed back there.

That explains more.  I was surprised how easy the paint came off the aluminum.  But if it is chrome I understand.  I could remove some with just my fingernail.

Thanks,

Tim.

Now, I did NOT know that. I thought that paint finish was kinda strange and blotchy. :)

I removed the paint with a wire wheel and drill on my wife's redline. I don't know why they painted them?

Innnnttterrresssttttinnnggg!!!!!  I would like to see a pic but imagine they look fantastic!  Unless they quickly get covered with brake dust that would now be more visible.....
