Ive been watching Nascar all day  :drive:  Do you know how Danica did?

I suppose you could look it up like I did . . . 25th of 28.  I hope you enjoy her in NASCAR next year.  Needless to say, she's not putting forth a full effort in Indycar since making the decision to go to NASCAR.  She isn't very fast, but she doesn't crash and usually finishes.

Just got back from the Grand Prix.  There was a lot of passing in the ALMS race, clean passing for the most part.  All street courses are narrow but the drivers I talked to love it and think they see chances for passing.  First ALMS I have seen - the combination of ground shaking Vettes and screaming Ferraris plus the prototypes is an amazing sensation to hear and feel, much less see.

The ALMS was running there today? Somehow I missed that fact. Not an indy car fan, (push to pass? gimmicky.) but I definitely would have come up for the ALMS race.

If there was no push to pass there probably would be very little passing since they made the series so spec.  But really, there are no gimmicks in NASCAR???

NA$CAR doesn't even race stock cars any more, so they're just a contradiction in terms IMO. I watch it the first part of the season when FOX covers the races but I'm not a big enough fan to watch the races after that point. Seems they are just writing way too many rules. The whole point of racing is to try and be the fastest one out there, and NA$CAR and Indy go out of their way to slow things down.

I know F1 and others do the same thing, but I see it having more detrimental affects on these series.

If there was no push to pass there probably would be very little passing since they made the series so spec.

Even with push to pass (also called push to not get passed) there is remarkably little passing on most street circuits.  They are narrow, and not much room for mistakes. That and the cars are so equal in the engine department there is almost no difference in performance.

Well, at 240 mph at California Speedway and 185 mph on Pratt Street, Indy is not that slow yet.  They started to slow things down 10-15 years ago because the cars got way too fast the circuits and human physiology - folks blacking out on Texas Motor Speedway.  And NASCAR cars flying through the air halfway the length of the track.  But I did like the good ole days better when NASCAR was real stock cars and IndyCar had different engines, chassis, and tires.  Expense also killed some of that.  No such thing as perfect I suppose and each race type has its own fans.

Yes, Indy car now all use the same, locked down Honda engine.  So differences are in suspension and setup.

Isn't Indy car the series where all the teams use the same exact engines?

And the same exact chassis and the same exact tires. The only difference is the paint, aerodynamic setup, and suspension setup.

They turned into a spec series when the technology race just about priced them out of existence in the early 90s.  Of course, there are many race series which have different engines, cars, etc. and then handicap through various means to make them all equal.  That seems stranger to me.  But, what IndyCar does is maximize on driver and setup skills.

Too bad ALMS wasn't on TV. They do have it streaming from their website, and you can watch it on demand from the site as well IIRC.

The real reason I didn't go to the race was there was an air show at the local Naval Air Station. Can you say planes flying at more than three times the 180 mph top speed of those indy cars?

watched all three this afternoon, Light's were a clean race, big bottlenecks in the other two.  Interesting because they took place in Baltimore.

Here are some pics and links to short YouTube clips of the past 3 days at the Baltimore Grand Prix.  I have been to races before but never a street course and it was something!  The buildings just intensify the sound and you can get really close!!  The sound in these clips is just a faint shadow of what it was like – everything including your body just resonates with the wonderful noise.  Cars at 190mph a few feet away (see the by the fence clip)!  The drivers are great – many took time for pics and autographs – there are pics of my son with Oriol Servia and getting an autograph from Graham Rahal as well as pics of other drivers.  We recorded the race and on TV Tony Kanaan looks all calm just before the race about his horrible warm up crash but we saw him 10 minutes before that in the paddock all upset. We also met several of the up and comings including 16 year old Gustavo Menezes, who talked for 15 minutes with my son about the cars and the track.

I was at turn 1, then end of the half-mile front straight.  Besides the shear impact, it was incredible to see cars slow from 190 mph to 40 mph in about 300 feet.  Will Power was faster for a good reason – he started braking about 50 feet later than everyone else.  Don’t know how he did it because all were smoking the fronts as they came into the turn.  I don’t like him personally but he is a great driver.

It was fun but hard to keep track of who was where.  A problem anyway, even with live timing and scoring on my phone for some of the races, but especially for the ALMS with 4 races in 1.  The lights on the sides of the cars help - but only when they were working.  There was lots of good passing and the thunder of the Vettes against the shriek of the Ferraris was awesome.
