So .... my clutch is all better``
« on: September 15, 2011, 01:13:26 PM »
Now that I have your attention, here is the deal. I have NO damn idea what has happened.   Zero.     Utterly clueless.   :gaah:

After the 2011 Solo Nats I was SO damn mad at myself about my driving, basically ignored Streak. It stayed on the trailer for almost a week, and then went straight into the shop on onto jack stands. In the meanwhile, I borrowed a Bobcat 873 to do some yard work. Three trees, an extension to my gravel parking pad (for the trailer and van), re-contour of one face of the septic pond, and a few other fun tasks, and it was time to tend to the car. As mentioned earlier, I had killed the front pads, so after buying used rotors from DDM and 98% new AX6 pads from another member the front brakes were renewed. Needless to say the pads had to be seated to the rotors so off for I drive I went. That went as planned, but there was something seriously different which had my doing some   . Then it struck me -- the clutch feels different.  After a few starts and some shifting about it was clear that the clutch action was back to where it was with the stock clutch.

I had resigned myself to pulling the transmission again, but it appears that it may not be necessary. I have an event to run this weekend and will see what happens. But for now, I can only conclude that a low clutch pedal with a Spec set up can be resolved by a) brake repairs, b) three weeks of self loathing, or c) tree removal. These are my considered conclusions, there is clearly no room for debate, and since this is my story I am sticking to it. Otherwise I would be sorting out a significant  :worms: :worms: :worms: and I would rather do other things !!!!

I am going to guess you had some air in the system that finally worked it's way back to the reservoir.  Our clutches should be self bleeding and if you had some air in the system that was in smaller bubbles perhaps letting it set allowed the bubbles to rejoin and find their way back to the reservoir.

there has been proven by many researches and experiments, that yard work actually improves clutch performance .....

Glad it is (self-) fixed sob!
SA's explanation seems reasonable...

maybe the clutch kind of needed to be worn a bit to fit perfectly...

Air trapped in line became condensed after hot summer time weather? :)

Did your push the piston back into the calipers?

First, sentence - can't imagine that this could be the problem.

Second sentence - what do you think ?!?!?!

Well, beat on Streak some more at a local school during "instructor runs". Clutch is still operating in the same range as the OEM set up. For the life of me, I do NOT know what has happened. But, I am SO f'en happy that I will not be taking out the gearbox this winter. THAT is time I can work on the GT6 restoration.

Wait until you switch over the transmission fluid to 5w30 motor oil. I mixed a little 0w30 and it has the nicest action when cold.

Shifts FINE with GM Synthetic transmission lube. BTW, six runs Saturday and 5 on Sunday, and the pedal is perfect. Scratched of the "to-do" list.

Errr, ummmm, WHAT??? That is a link to a missive about Bob Lutz. Oh, and the SCCA Nationals were in (wonderful host) Lincoln, Ne.

The Kappa platform really is fun to work with. And it is a BIG challenge due to a small data base and limited available equipment. Andy Hohl drove the snot out of Streak and Alex wailed away on hos super clean GXP. There are a LOT of cars that are easy to prep (just need some money), but getting a Kappa right really takes some chin scratching and a lot of hours. Driving one well helps as well, and the two "A's" showed that.
