18x9's OZ's at TR on closeout
« on: February 11, 2009, 12:11:39 AM »
Just thought I'd share that with others that want to run an 18x9 all the way around for track duty.  They are supposed to work F & R w/a  275/35/18 tire.  I ordered a set.

Two questions…

How much rub on the fronts when in full steering lock…?

You say 275/35X18, I wonder how the 265/35R18 Bridgestone RE-01Rs might do…?

Thanks!

According to my-low-sol on the solsticeforum, 265/40/18's fit fine without problems on the OZ 18x9.

There's no rub on the 275/35's.  Sticky tire though makes the car easier to stall while turning at low speed though, due to increased demand on the p/s pump.

If tires could stall ANY Sol or Sky there is something very wrong with the car, NOT the tires. When I race on 295/30x18 A6 Hoosiers (the stickiest DOT tires one can mount on a car) and never stalled it (due to steering input, anyway).

Newb alert, is there any reason you shouldn't run 18x9 on the front on the street?

I would think it would make the handling sluggish with the extra rubber up front and it is not really needed, the car looks very good with a staggered setup. I know that RMR raced with 225's on 18X8's up front and 265's on 18X9's in the back. They were limited to 265's due to the fact that was the widest 18 Bridgestone made. I know they wanted a wider tire in back.

It is not universally shared, but my personal opinion is that the larger contact patch wide fronts give you is outweighed by less rolling resistance and lighter unsprung weight of the slightly narrower wheel/tire, but its a close call.  I will say that the fastest guy around here with an A stock GXP runs 295 R compounds on 9" wheels on all corners.

Nonetheless, based on this weekend, I think it will not be too hard to dial out the last of the objectionable understeer.  I do not regret at all running a staggered set up.  Wide tires up front tram like hell.

Actually, wider wheels in Stock is illegal. As for running larger (wider) tires, if the car can use it, the traction increase completely offsets the small increase in weight. On a car such as a GXP or Redline smaller front tires than the rear will INCREASE the tendency for understeer as the rear grip has increased.

I think I would prefer oversteer over understeer, traction control, or my foot can control oversteer pretty easily. Understeer is scary on public roads and makes me slam on the brakes.

But maybe I don't know the correction tech

Eh, I was in the process of doing a 3 pointer, and it seems to take more throttle to leave smoothly.  Once going, there's no problem.

Based on the driving I did on them, I have to disagree.  I switched between stock size Z1's and the 275 Z1's.  Noticeable difference in turn in, and feel.  It may well be that at the very extreme side of driving perfectly on the 245's might be equal, but I am pretty sure that there's a greater safety factor in running more rubber.

Anyone know if I can buy 4 of these 18x9 wheels and use them on the stock GXP tires? Will they fit fine up front and in the rear or do I need to purchase new tires for this?

The 245/45/18's will fit OK on a 9" rim width, if that's what you're asking.

Sure. This 18X9 Ultra with your stock Goodyears will fit just fine.
