My tire sealant went bad.
« on: November 14, 2011, 10:03:25 AM »
Surprised a search on "tire sealant" returned nothing about this even though I remember reading about it some time ago.

Anyway, picked up a piece of metal in my rear tire, click, click, click, going down the road.  Stopped, found it, and pulled it out.  Then I heard the hissing.  Okay, get out the pump and sealant.  Hook it all up and nothing comes out.  The pressure gauge is off the scale, so it must be plugged.  I just put air in the tire, to 31#.  Limp home, stopping every ten miles to check pressure and refill.

I have a 2007 GXP, so the sealant goes bad in five years (or maybe less).  I heard replacement sealant is expensive, will just buy a can of flat fix at the auto store instead.  My pump did work just fine though, took it about one minute to go from 25# to 31#.

Well, the compressor will still work to inflate a tire, you just won't  be able to use the sealant.

I don't like using the sealant anyway, as it generally makes the tire not repairable.

I had a nail in my tire once and just used the compressor without the sealant to inflate the tire with enough air to get to a garage where they were able to plug the nail hole so I could keep the tire..

Simple solution - Buy a plug kit from Advance Auto or somewhere and keep it in the car.  I've used mine twice with excellent results and it a WHOLE LOT CHEAPER!

I just put a jack, lug wrench & plug in the trunk. That way plug it on the spot & don't worry about. If you read the label. They recommend to get the sealant out of the tire as soon a possible, before it start to eat at the rim.

22732105, $29.38 retail from the dealer. Not too bad, but I would definitely get a plug kit too, use the sealant when it's the only option.

even if you are stranded, a tow may be cheaper than using the sealant.

Plug kit is the best option IMO.

Its pretty simple BSS. Biggest issue is ususally getting the hole big enough to get the plug tool in.

I bought a cheapy plug tool kit, and didnt make it through one plugged tire before I broke off the handle on the rasp. However I was working on a truck tire and was right against a reinforcement belt.

Tires are pretty tough, so getting the right hole can be a pain. However the steps are easy enough to understand. There are videos on youtube as well.

Isn't that always the way?

BS I've seen it done a couple of times and it looks pretty straight forward, but Miller is right, sometimes you have to drill the hole a little before you plug it.

Finding the right hole shouldn't be a problem...  You just have to get it wet first!

No, as I have never purchased a plug kit, I was just wondering what others have been using and had good luck with.

I have used a couple of different kits, the big difference is in the construction of the handle.  The ones that are like a screwdriver don't allow you to press the plug in as easily as the "T" handles however you have to make sure the "T" handle is strong enough that you don't break the handle and injure yourself.

I always had good luck with plug kits . That the roughing tool & the plug tool have "T" handles. they don't break easily.

Okay, sealant bad to use, plug kit good.  On my tire I picked up a piece of metal about 1" long and 1/2" wide.  The end that went into the tire was U shaped, tapered to two points.  So my puncture was either a slit 1/2" wide or two slits totaling less than 1/2" in length.
Since my tire lost a total of 10# of pressure in one hour of driving fifty miles I'll assume it was not a big opening.  Say I had two punctures, about 1/16" each, about 1/2" apart.

Can a plug (actually two) be put into such a small puncture close to each other?

This piece of metal I ran over is very thin, I'm surprised it went into the tire, I could bend it with my fingers.

Tim.

Generally plugs are for punctures and slits are not usually repairable.  When I worked at a place that sold tires they wouldn't even try to repair a slit (insert joke here GJ), they were also pretty pickey about punctures that were close to the sidewall of the tire.

You could go to a tire shop and see if they would patch the tire from the inside.  You may just be S.O.L

I've noticed I don't need to comment. Slit, plug, hole, tool.
