Brakes stuck to rotors again! WTF...need some help please!
« on: January 03, 2012, 11:56:14 AM »
This is now the second time this has happened to me. I washed the car. Dried it and put in the garage. This morning, I went to back out and heard this loud "BANG". Now when I hit the brakes, it feels like one tire is flat or I have rocks in the brakes.WTF. I had this same issue last year and went to dimpled rotors and semi-metallic pads when the factory stuff warped. Now on the drive in to work this morning, it feels like the tire is flat when I use the brakes....When I get home, I'm gonna take the wheels off and use some heavy duty brake cleaner to clean the rotors off, but if that doesn't help then I don't know what? Every time the weather changes, something goes wrong with this damn car.... ... Your thoughts?

Normal.  I have accepted that fact as a "feature".

The friction surface of the brake rotor is bare steel.  It slowly corrodes even just sitting there; it gets worse when it's parked after a wash.  While a pad wipes a friction surface during a short roll into the garage, the moisture is still there and it gets worse with cross-drilled and/or slotted rotors as those pockets store water.  The unevenness in surface condition creates the pulsating feel.

My solution is to perform hard braking (watch for those behind you), thus reducing the unevenness.

If the pulsation didn't go away then you got something more structural, i.e. warped rotors.  As a ME, I never like holes and slots on a rotor.  No matter how they are machined, shaped, and manipulated, they still belong to one category - stress concentrator.  And IMO, they are more prone to warping.

Don't get me wrong, they are pretty to look at and exude a "racing" image.  My Z06 came with cross-drilled rotors and at times I wish they were just plain.

Could always go with the new DDM "J hook" rotors! Help give you more grab and are less prone to warping.

I cant say I have ever had this issue with mine, and it sits for quite a while each year in the winter...

I have EBC 'dimpled' and slotted rotors. Rather than ruin the integrity of the rotor and drilling all the way through, EBC uses small 'dimples' to reduce excessive friction and increase heat dissipation.

They are very expensive, but they do not corrode or give me this problem.  You can't buy cheap stuff, or you'll get cheap results....

Seems kind of strange. When I lived in Florida the car got rained on often and with the high humidity year round the rotors frequently had a coating of rust. But I never experienced what you have described.

Could it be your tolerance between brake pad and rotor is closer than most solstice's and allowing a "bridge" of rust to form?

the only time I've heard of a loud 'bang' occurring was a problem with the parking brake in certain cars...  have you checked out your parking brake?

also, when installing fresh brakes, you have to drive around VERY slowly and VERY LIGHTLY ease into the brakes and allow them to seat and work synergistically.  if you brake hard right after install, you can warp them or crack them immediately.

I try to take the car around the block to heat up the brakes before I put it away to help dry things out. This has helped me with this problem.

Happens to me with any of my cars when I wash them.  Rust never sleeps. And its strong stuff. Just think of freeing rusty bolts.

My rust is gone in a mile of driving, so if you have more psating then you may have warpage. Also, some one one here once posted a year or so ago thatwarping is more uneven distribution of brake material on the disk. Maybe the rust pulled a thin layer of brake lining onto the disk?

Didn't you smoke these brakes at the track?  Maybe that had something to do with it.

BSS ; that happened to mine last year but Only after parking over night . Then it was only when backing up at first. took it to the dealer ,they checked them and said they were warped  N replaced them .Said it could be from over Torquing wheels . No issues from that time on.

glad it's sorted out. the release could have just been the pads and rotors getting cleaned off

DO NOT scrub the rotors with anything, seriously.

That's right Jack, lubricating the rotors will lead to much smoother braking ;)

you don't need brake cleaner if everything is fine. I don't think Brakeleen will remove rust on it's own.

BS, try not setting the p-brake next time you wash or drive it arround the block to dry the brakes before you garage it.  :)
