Westers tune installed
« on: February 12, 2009, 06:36:47 PM »
We'll after a fitfull install of HP Tuners I finally got things sorted out. Seems if one receives the wrong serial number and key code (without knowing it) everything sort of  :barf: in the computer. Bill at HPT and Dave at Dejon got the correct information to me so after working that out at my end this allowed me to flash copy the stock program and send it to Lyndon. It was quickly returned but another minor SNAFU struck. Once again Bill helped out, so after a program update to be compatible with Lyndon's version I was able to reflash my ECM. (Interesting side note; the LNF ECM takes 20 minutes to completely copy where the 2.4 takes about 4-5 minutes. Now THAT is a big pile of code!!!)

First drive would have been almost a ho-hum because there was not as big a change as I anticipated. But upon a bit of reflection I had to factor in that a catless DP went on last week which REAL woke up things in the mid-range. So there was s significant change already in place and another big change today. Had I done the DP and tune at the same time I am quite confident I would have wetted myself!!!!!! It was weird hammering the car in 1st and 2nd and WAITING until 7000 rpm to shift. NICE. Also, after only one 10 minute drive cycle the engine gets a bit confused at about 6000 rpm but that is most likely a "learn" situation. Kind of fun looking at 22-23 psi instead of 14-16 psi, and it sure can be felt. Even with re-valved Konis, 450 pound rear springs, and a Pro-Beam in second gear between 5500 and 6000 rpm it sort of  :drag: and almost will not stay hooked up (on those Goodyears). Can't wait to throw the Hoosiers on and see how it is. Also seems smoother at idle and light load around 45-60 mph. Next, I'll put some more miles on it to let it "learn". But first, the control arms come off for some poly bushings.

snaponbob, certainly glad to learn that all the early issues were quickly resolved.  Wow, interesting that the LNF ECM takes 20 minutes to completely copy whereas the 2.4 takes about 4-5 minutes.  And when the learning curve is complete, from what I have observed in other posts, you will begin to realize what you have.  I remember what happened with my GXP when it was new, it took a honeymoon period to get to know each other.  Funny, how those things work out over time.  Amazing technology in these things.  I will be following closely your reports on the honeymoon.  Happy for you big fella.    :woohoo: :ghug: :drag:

You are correct, it takes about 20 minutes for a full read, but, you don't have to write entire to program a new tune. Use "write calibration only" which take only about 30 seconds and only updates the values that change.  The only learning the car does it the fuel trim.

Made a call about that before I hit the ENTER key. As for the learning curve for me, I am going to do practically nothing with Lyndon's tune unless he tells me to do so. I am just smart enough to now I am not smart enough. One weird thing that the gauge cluster does now is that the LOCK icon (lower light) comes on then goes out. Next step is to do a teat to the waste gate per Lyndon to try to recover some apparent loss of real low end torque vs. how it felt with NO tune but WITH the catless DP. Dejon spring is waiting as well.

I would do about 7 to 10 key recycles. Drive about 5 miles or so going through 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th gears every time at 4500 RPM minimum.
Turn off the car off wait a few minutes and repeat the process.
By the end of the key cycles the ECM should have done all the adjustment necessary.

I will have to restrict that to 3rd. The local and State cops are pretty serious here !!!!!!!!

Apparently I forgot what the car felt like, or the car was studying the new specs in the ECM while the key was off. I  :drag: the car this morning. When I shifted the car third at 6500 rpm third engaged at about 4000 rpm and the turbo instantly went to 23psi and the rear tires were NOT happy about it. It was a    :gaah: :woohoo: :gaah:  moment. MUCH smoother from 500 to 6500 rpm in all gears. If that ECM is "learning", it is a quick study. As so many others have reported ..................   :yay: :yay:   :brnout:

I am sure aware of Takoma Park. Spent my first 10 years there. 7311 Holly Ave. Two blocks away was the best snow sledding in Montgomery Co. In the winter the neighbors would block off three long blocks, set bon fires up and down the street, and hindreds of people would show up. Now THAT was part of "the good old days" that will only be seen in small town America. A REAL neighborhood.

snaponbob, I know you posted this yesterday, but had to repost your post.  Normally don't do that but that much fun cannot be denied.  Just fun to hear the excitement and energy you experienced after a short spin in your retooled 2007 Redline.  Anything else you can leave us with.  Can't wait to see the smile on your face at the next mini meet.

Hey I used to live in Takoma Park also but it was in 1969.  The house is now part of Metro track system.  It was a great neighborhood then.

Now back to the thread.  I really need to get to Joe's for my Westers tune of my GM tune.  I am expecting a rocket.
