A question about BOM
« on: February 13, 2009, 01:01:03 PM »
I am a biker and for years this guy has been selling this stuff at bike shows called BOM. I have used it it works really well as a cleaner but as far as I can tell leaves no protection behind, I know I have never seen anything that will remove bugs and sap like it. I always rewax after I use it but it does leave a really smooth finish. I have never seen anything like it for cars. I am curious do you have any idea what the heck this stuff is? I don't think it hurts my paint, but anything that will let you wipe sap right off I gotta wonder.  Think they just changed the name to Captain Richards Best, thanks for your help.

Goat...I've used BOM for years (now Captain R...), but I've only ever used it on my chrome.  You're right in saying that the cleaner does not leave anything behind.  It cleans very well, but there is no protection left.  The chrome polish is what I follow the cleaner up with.

In the winter, I take my summer tires into the living room, and BOM away for 1 cleaning and 2 polishings.  The results are sparkling, and the upside is, it lasts all summer (for me).  All I do to my wheels during the summer is hose them off and towel dry.

I've also take to using it in the spring on the Corsa exhaust tips and even the mufflers.  It cleans them up to better than new shine!  I don't use the polish on the exhaust obviously, so I end up doing the exhaust clean a couple of times during the summer.  If the product they sell for cleaning/waxing your paint works 1/2 as good as the chrome products, you'd probably be happy with it.

I have used it on the paint on the bike and the car really cleans but does it remove the wax that is on the car, I kind of think it does, but the gentlest thing I have ever used that will remove tree sap. I want to know what the heck it is.

I have taken pine sap off of my top using Bug Squash from PBW.  My top has not treated since the factory either.

Lg, do you spray it on, let it set, then wash it off?

There is BOM a metal polish and sealer and BEST.  Here is the FAQ on BEST.

1. How can Capt. Richards Best be applied directly to the dirty surface of my clearcoat, chrome or windshield without scratching the surface?
Capt. Richards Best is a two step process. You could say you are safely washing at the same time as polishing. The first step involves applying the product with a damp cloth, which is supplied, doing a small area at a time, which cleans the surface of dirty, grease. grime, bird droppings, and water spots. The second step, buffing the product dry, bonds the product to the surface, making it very smooth and therefore giving you a deeper and clearer finish. If what you are cleaning is very dirty use our Cherry Bike Wash or our All Purpose Cleaner first and then apply Capt. Richards Best.

2. Can Capt. Richards Best clean and polish glass and chrome?
Yes. Capt. Richards Best can make chrome, glass, Plexiglas, lexan and any smooth polishable surface look absolutely beautiful. Capt. Richards Best is also safe for tinted windows because there is no ammonia in this product. Never put an abrasive product on your chrome. With Capt. Richards Best your chrome will look like leaded crystal, deep, rich and beautiful. There is no such thing as chrome polish, chrome is already polished when you buy it and does not oxidize.

3. Will Capt. Richards Best harm the finish on my machine?
Capt. Richards Best will help you protect your  finish and keep that showroom look while adding depth and helping to remove swirl marks and help prolong the damaging effects of UV rays.

4. Does Capt. Richards Best repel water?
Capt. Richards Best is great for beading and sheeting water to give you less water spots, and you will have a better view through your windshield, even in the rain.

5. Can Capt. Richards Best be used on the inside of my vehicle?
Yes, you can use Capt. Richards Best on the dashboard, dials or any other hard smooth surface without leaving a greasy oily after feel.

6. Can I use Capt. Richards Best inside the house?
Yes. Capt. Richards Best is the best there is for windows, mirrors, kitchen appliances, bathroom fixtures, ceramic tile, computer or TV screens, fish tanks, marble or granite countertops, musical instruments and any other finished surface. It makes surfaces very smooth, so you must be careful not to use it where you walk.

7. Can I use Capt. Richards Best on my motorcycle windshield?
Absolutely. Capt. Richards Best will help clear your windshield up and give you a better view, and also give you a layer of protection, making it easier to clean and bugs will be much easier to remove. There is no ammonia, no buildup and no discoloration. Never put Windex, rain-x, paper towels, rags or the crap at the gas stations on your windshield, because you run the risk of ruining your windshield.

8. Will Capt. Richards Best hurt any engine parts?
No, and you can do your inner primary without Capt. Richards Best turning colors like some products do, and your inner primary will stay nice and black.

9. How many cleanings can I expect to get?
Capt. Richards Best is an easy years supply , even for the cleaning maniacs. It's very inexpensive to use and can save a lot of time and money. You can clean and polish 150 or more motorcycles and 40 to 60 cars.

10. How long will it last?
The sun does not cook Capt. Richards Best off the finish. I live in Florida and in as little as three days the sun can bake your wax off your finish, but not with Capt. Richards Best. You will get much longer protection, but each layer you put on will make your paint job look deeper and deeper and deeper, and it's so easy and quick to apply.  If you have a motorcycle,  do your inner primary with Capt. Richards Best, and it stays nice and black with no bleeding and no graying. Try that with some of your cleaners.

The Capt's Best used to be called B.O.M. stood for Best Overall Method, and I have read the ads, I have used it for years. I wanted info from an outsider that might have a clue as to what this stuff is that's why I asked Poorboy, what the heck is it?

Yes I spay it on the sap wait maybe 90 seconds and wipe with MF, if any sap is left spray again, you ca dilute it like 50/50 or even more and it still works.

I am not trying to sell it or endorse it, this is posted in Poorboys's section as a question about what it is, and does he think it is harmful, I know the manufacturer says it's not.

I moved it to general detailing as I have never seen the stuff and really couldn't comment on it. ;)  Like Go-N Def use Bug Squash in the same manor and it removes Sap, Bugs, Race Rubber (story to this one), water spots on glass ...etc ....
It could be a similar chemical make up, but again I've never seen it before :)

This is unlike anything else I have seen and I have been trying for years to find out what the heck it is, most bug and sap removers I have seen are citrus based, and work well. This is not citrus based, it is clear very thin and can be diluted with water. You can find it on Amazon about as cheap as anywhere, just look for Capt. Richards, there used to be some stuff called BAM that was also sold at bike shows, pretty much the same thing.
