NASSM 2012 Run Guide
« on: November 23, 2011, 09:36:45 PM »
Ok folks George (duckSol) asked me to post up some of the run maps and descriptions for everyone to peruse and discus. So here we go with run number 1... I will be posting more run maps in the coming weeks.

Mel’s Ride – This is a short ride that will be offered Wednesday only. This is a twisty short run up to the Blue Ridge Parkway on Town Mountain Road then runs about 2 miles along the Parkway before turning onto Elk Park Scenic  Highway. The run then continues along Merrimon Ave with a stop at a great little Ice Cream Shop before continuing on to Riverside drive for a trip along the French Broad River on the way back to the Crowne Plaza.

Mel’s Ride – Approx. 40 miles, Approx. time, 1 Hour and 45 Minutes.

This run will be offered Wednesday ONLY...

Remember that we are also in need of Run Captains and Sweeps.

Run Description and Map Number 2 for 2012...

Okay. Run description and map number 2 for 2012...

Bat Cave – This is a nice little twisty run that winds its way down past Chimney Rock and Lake Lure. The run gets its name from both one of the areas that you will pass through on this run and one of the twisty roads on this run, Bat Cave.

Bat Cave – Approx. 110 miles, Approx. time, 3 Hours. Stops are NOT included. Run could be longer depending on traffic around Lake Lure and if people would like to stop and visit Chimney Rock.

This run will be offered Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday.

Run Description and Map Number 3 for 2012...

The Devil’s Staircase – This description and quote are from the Devil’s Staircase website.

So...What's The Devil's Stair case?
It's 16 miles of pure adrenaline and challenge! It separates the men from the boys and the women from the girls! POSERS BEWARE!!!
(One word of CAUTION - When you see the SCHOOL BUS Turnaround Sign, you've just reached THE POINT OF NO RETURN!)

So...What IS The Devil's Staircase?
It's only one of the most technically difficult roads around. Don't take our word for it.

Here's real comments & ratings about NC 80.

"Climbs 2500' in elevation. Crosses Blue Ridge Parkway east of Mt Mitchell. Beautiful lake on south end and great views of Mt Mitchell at Mt Mitchell golf course."

"Good road condition. More curves and elevation changes than the Dragon’s tail with a lot less traffic also. Several switchbacks. Not for the novice rider."

"This is a fantastic ride. Much better than the Tail of the Dragon in my book and more challenging. Just when you get to open the bike up a bit you have to brake and set up for another tight twisty. Hwy 80 is also near some other great roads in the area. Take a trip there you will not be disappointed."

Video clip:
Devils Stair Case

Devil’s Staircase – Approximately 129 miles, Approximate time 3 Hours & 15 minutes. Stops are NOT included in this run time.

This run will be offered Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday.

A note they have recently change the name to The Devil's Whip but I'm not changing it...

Run Description and Map Number 4 for 2012...

The French Twist – The French Twist is Asheville’s version of T2TR. 90 percent of this run is alongside the French Broad River or mountain streams flowing into the French Broad, hence the Name French Twist. There will be 2 versions of this run. Both runs have some beautiful mountain scenery and some good twists and turns… One run is for the cruiser’s that want a nice scenic run that is shorter and one that is not as twisty. The other run for the more adventurous folks is longer and has lots of twists and turns and even some blind rises. There will be a Cruiser’s and a Moonshiner’s version of the long run as well.

This run will be be offered Thursday & Friday

French Twist Cruise – Approximately 91.5 miles, Approximate time 2 Hours & 15 minutes. Stops are NOT included in this run time.

French Twist – Approximately 156 miles, Approximate time 3 Hours & 35 minutes. Stops are NOT included in this run time.

« Reply #6 on: January 13, 2012, 09:31:49 PM »
Well folks sorry for taking so long to post up the last run map but I have been other wise occupied due to the death of my mother just before Christmas.

So without further adieu.

Run description and map number 5 for 2012...

Caesars Head – This run go’s out to Canton North Carolina where we pick up the nice twisty route 215. 215 carries you past Lake Logan and up across the Blue Ridge Parkway, with some nice stream views along the way, then down into South Carolina. Once in South Carolina you will travel past Table Rock Mountain and on to Table Rock Road, which has some very nice roller coasters on it. From there you will turn back north and head for the climb up Caesars Head and back into North Carolina and on to route 276 passing Looking Glass Falls and Sliding Rock heading up to the Parkway. You will follow the Parkway for a few miles before getting onto route 151 which has 86 curves in approximately 3 miles.

Caesars Head – Approximately 154 miles, Approx. 4 Hours stops NOT included. This does however include an extra 30 minutes for a possible stop at Looking Glass Falls.

This run will be be offered Thursday & Friday

Other than 2 Blue Ridge Parkway Cruises for the Cruisers this is the Last Run Map...

Runs look great.  Thanks for all your work.  Is there any way that we will be able to schedule to do all five runs?
