10 Years From Now...
« on: March 24, 2012, 03:07:57 PM »
How hard do you guys and gals think it will be to find parts for our kappas 10+ years from now? As some of you know I am starting to look for a new (newer) pony car and currently plan to keep my GXP. But if in the  future it becomes darn near impossible to find parts for it I might be better off selling it. Thinking of things like suspension and panels. And of course the top and glass...

Who can say,10 years from now . Cars may have the same basics or they could revert back to cars of the 1960s,70s or 80s. There may be One central brand w/ no Fords,Chevy,Chrysler. The big Question is Will We Still Be Here .Might be like Mad Max every one Makes their Own . 1 never Knows  :idk:  that my     :2c:   worth      oh and thats why there body shops.

My worry is we get very little support now. If the kappa had a chance to grow up and become more popular there would undoubtedly be after market support as in classic fords or chevy's. They killed our car before it could grow up. If either Ponitac OR Saturn had survived we would be okay (at least mechanically) but alas, they are no more...

My Jeep has 198,+ and well broken in . In 10 years if it is still running just tires tune-ups and whatever may not have use for another vehicle .

My 23 year old Fiero isn't a huge problem to find most things. Mind you they made around 3X as many Fieros in total and that supports the after market even though the GTs like mine were made in lower numbers than the Kappas

The Eagle will be running 10 years from now and by then probably will be even more of an antique but that is fine with me because the lines are "classic" and "Miss Red Eagle" will always fly like a bird and the gurgle of the tailpipes is music to my ears!  I may decide to replace the tail pipes to provide an earthier sound kind of like the old '95 Firebird, but the sound of the bird will never be like the Eagle because it was an 8 cylinder but the gurgle it had was awesome indeed!!! :drag: :brnout: :us2:

Thanks! I must say all your responses have put most of my worries to rest. Mostly.  I do keep forgetting that much of our car was pulled from the parts bin so I guess parts won't be a major factor down the road.

As long as there is a fan base you should be able to find parts; though it may take longer to find certain replacement  body panels.

The vert will probably fall into two categories; minor/major.   Minor repair = local upholstery, major repair = reproduction (convertibletopguys.com).  Other options may be to search/buy & store a used one until needed, or invest in a Smoothline hardtop now (wonder if we could generate a group discount if enough were seriously interested).

Glass would probably be the same route (http://www.sandersreproglass.com/faqs.php)

As it looks, if there is a desire (and money to be made) there is someone that can help/point you in the direction you need to go.

According to wiki, there were 65,000 Solstices made.
According to wiki, there were 57,000 US 944s made.
Finding parts for my 20+ year old German car is pretty easy, so I think that for a US car that has more numbers we'll be fine. In fact, I'm getting a new windshield installed for $230.
