Can you make the honeycomb octagons instead of hexagons? I think it will blend better in the overall design.

I posted this thread on the SF, mainly to let folks that progress continues to be made thanks to Sol Asylum. And asking if anyone has ideas or suggestions in turning recessed grills into reality to post in this thread.

Nothing else is needed to make this a reality. You give the CAD files to a 3D printing service, tell them what material to make it out of, pay them, and they ship you the parts. This sort of thing happens every day.

OK, guess I was hoping a vendor would step up and produce them. 3D printing doesn't produce a smooth finish does it.

I continue to think about asking for a CAD file copy from SA and getting estimates to have a set produced, but then I got to thinking what if they don't fit correctly, and discovering the CAD file had to be tweaked just a little ($$$). That would be expensive for a one-off set, and another reason I wish a vendor would step-up. I know, I know, dream on.

Assuming the CAD models from GM are correct then the grills should fit with no problem. I didn't change any of the mounting parts of the grill that should still be the same as what's on your car now.

With this thread rolling for over three years, what about grouping together funds to build a prototype for R&D and if it works you figure your cost to build more. We've seen the KP family give for good causes. I don't need one for my car but I'd chip in a few bucks to see it happen. Think of it as the KP kickstarter. GJ can hold the money as secretary.

So, maybe this is a day late and a dollar short (so by all means ignore me, if you want)...

Why not just do a two-piece per side part (from the start), with the rim/frame having 6 or so screw posts, and a separate grill that attaches (with screws) to the rim from the rear? This would have multiple advantages:

1. Only one (set) of CAD files
2. The ability to easily sand/finish both the frames AND the flat surfaces of the grills far more easily than if combined in one single piece. (Especially useful given the 3D printing process can leave build lines everywhere.)
3. The ability to more easily paint in contrasting colors (if reqd).
4. Allows the use of a different grille material OR the ability to move to a different grille material later, if wanted.

Advantage number 2, I think, is especially important!

So here's the deal, I already have well over 40 hrs in the first set that is finished. The other version that you asked for will take me maybe another 5 to 10 hrs. What you are now asking for is probably pushing 20 to 30 hrs if things go well.

1. I have limited free time.
2. These aren't something I wanted for my car.
3. I have quite a few other projects that have higher priority on my list and require my free time see item 1. I actually have some projects that I could be making money off of but even those are on hold right now. I'm not doing the grills for any kind of compensation however I will probably ask that people make some sort of donation to this forum.
4. No matter how many versions I do there will always be someone that wants something different.

3D printing has come a long way as far as resolution and finish is concerned so as long as we find a good print service I don't think there is going to be a lot of finish work needing to be done. Right now what I want to do is get the second version done then send the two designs off to a print service to get quotes and input from them on expected results. After that we will see if it's worth moving forward with getting them made.

I totally agree that i is totally worth moving forward...totally.

And I like the idea of contributing to the forum if these go anywhere, and agree w/two part recessed grills, it does make it easier to paint the parts two different colors easier. Also, I'd still would like to see a vendor sell these. I know that RKSports still produces the Aftershock ducktail spoiler.

The pic makes the outer grills look flat gray, but they are silver metallic, and the inner hexagon grills are satin black. I choose to contrast the parts because I wanted the recessed grills to stand out.

Coming in late (and on a Sol thread), but the (humorously?) suggested $1k for grilles deserves additional awkward silence as a non-performance add, IMO.
If the prototyper and audience is on the same page around interest, a good forum could be Kickstarter, Indiegogo, etc., to take it to a crowdfund.

Yes, you're coming in late... First you should completely ignore EVERYTHING Gentleman ~~Jim~~ Jack says. Second the premise of these grills is that Sol Asylum has been working on CAD drawings for the grills in the background and once finished, we would take those drawings and get them 3D printed at a custom facility at our own cost.
