Clutch install
« on: November 10, 2012, 02:55:04 PM »
At the DDM Open House, the crew down there swapped in a Spec 3+ Clutch.
Since there have been some recent threads asking about what is involved, and how hard it might be, I am sharing some photos of the install

This was not an easy task and apparently each Spec 3+ install has it's own little quirks.  In this instance, we could not bolt the transmission back to the engine with the Spec Spacer.

Kudos for Critterman for noticing the gap was the same as the height of spacer.

Here are some pics of a recent clutch swap to give you an idea of what gets removed to do it on a 2008+ model.

First of all, here is the pressure plate and flywheel.  I wish I had taken a picture of how thick the Aluminum Spec flywheel is.

Parts that were removed.
Both rear wheels,
the entire cat back,
the Torque arm,
the rear diff[Was cleaned up and had a full fluid change]
DDM Extreme backbone
2 shields from under the transmission
All of the above was to get out the driveshaft.

Finally ready to take out the transmission

Removal of the transmission that also shows the old clutch.
[Dave was removing the line that connects to the master cylinder]

Picture of Spec Clutch installed and getting ready to raise up the transmission again
Great shot of the shifter components

Raising the Transmission.   [The hanging item is the O2 Sensor and extender]

To those who have done this on jack stands in your own garage, I am amazed.

That pressure plate and flywheel seem to be time shifting in that first photo...  :D

How many miles you got on the new setup and how do you like it so far?

I've got a little over 1000 miles on it.  Sandy hit shortly after the install and the roads around here got a lot of debris.  Not very kappa friendly.
What little driving I have done, I like.  It engages quick and strong, but with the catch point being very low, it's much easier to manage.   Dave was saying I was going to stall it numerous times, but so far, so good.

Running a 2871 with E47 necessitated the install.

Really good pics!! Maybe a water pump how to video by DDM could be next!?!  Don't know of any reputable Saturn techs that would be able to do a job as our water pumps.  And being that the times I did have my water pump changed by the dealer, they were never able to get rid of that dreaded whining noise that we're all familiar with, makes me apprehensive on going back to them when the situation arises again.

Did you do a flywheel also? Haven't looked at pics yet.

I did my LE5 on jackstands with Exedy ll and aluminum flywheel. Feels more like a motorcycle now.

Yeah... it wasn't fun.  Bench pressing the tranny up into the tunnel, onto the dowels, and getting a bolt in requires more than one person... we took three to do that part of it.

So wish I had a lift at the time, but I just can't seem to find a way to fit it in the garage!

Great pics, and great post.  I didn't remove the diff when I did this either, but I would highly suggest doing so as easy as it is to do.  Also makes lining up things quick.

Thanks, more appropriately I should have stated that I have a ceiling height issue.  If I lift the car up so I can walk under it (which if I'm getting a lift it's going to go up and over my head), I need more space before the car goes through the ceiling!  :)

Also, I'd prefer a four post, as I don't have the concrete slab strength to hold up a two-post, and I'd prefer to store the car in the up position for the winter as well.  My buddy is building a new gigantic garage... we might have a lift there next winter.

I did mine with a transmission jack. I had it up and in a few times over the course just to verify the Cobalt parts would fit.

When the LNF manual trans cars came out they got the torque arm, so even the late 06 build GXPs and Redlines should have them.  I think later they put them on NAs as well but not sure of that.

My car does not have a torque arm.

Damn, I don't have a car.

Pretty sure the Misses car has some sort of an arm on it, but not really sure.  It doesn't have any TQ, so I doubt it has a torque arm.

No car.
Sad.

What am I going to go clean when I need some alone time?  I used to just go clean what ever car was in the garage and forget about everything that might be going on in the world.  I would just have pandora playing and listen to the sounds of the buffer and wax.

Perhaps someone will just park their car in my garage and I can clean it?  Anybody?

I'm on my way.  Should take me about three days... set up the spare room.

TS,
The spare room is taken for a few weeks, but you can stay in the new house. You may have a few odd jobs to do.....

I bet Critter's car could use a little TLC since Mike hasn't been around.

Dirt is scared of my car, I think Chief Mike put the fear of God into it.  Dirt that is.

On the other hand, not sure I would want my car in GJ's garage, something about doors????

Your doors open up so that would put a dent in a different part of GJ's garage door.
