What's the temp of the stock T-Stat?
« on: February 19, 2009, 11:44:30 PM »
Kinda like the info center and Ive noticed that the coolant temp runs about 194-200 degrees no matter what.  Would a person see any advantage going to a lower T-Stat?
I assume that our T-Stat must be 190* so is there a 170* T-Stat available and would there be any performance gain in going with the lower Stat? Any disadvantages with going with a lower stat than stock other than maybe increased fuel consumption since the ECM may think the vehicle is still cold.
Thanks

Contemporary gas engines have need for combustion chamber heat, and it mostly has to do with emissions. At the proper operating temps metals settle into their designed shapes, oils work as they should, and so on. If an Ecotec engine runs cool it will not live as long and will produce LESS power. Colder thermostats are a VERY old school tuning trick. Don't do it as the results are all negative.

That's what I needed to know and why Im asking instead of just doing.
Im finding out that the Modular motors that Ford uses in there Cobra's as well as there Lighting's are more old school V8's in technology while the 4 Cyclinder used in the Solstice is more High tech new technology.
In my 03 Superchaged Harley Truck which was  basically a Supercrew Lightning you could do alot of old school stuff to that Modular motor for power gains like use a colder T-Stat.  As with anything though there was a limit to what you could do with the stock motor.  Pushing the motor and block past 525Hp and 600Tq at the crank was about the limit unless you upgraded the lower end and rods on those motors and I was real close to those limits on a stock block.  If you upgraded then you could push them past 700Hp and 700Tq at the crank with no problem of damaging your motor with the correct tune.
