Name that sound...
« on: January 17, 2013, 04:29:13 PM »
Ok. When I back off my driveway, at an angle, onto the street (couple inches of drop) I am hearing a low to moderate "pop" when the drivers side rear tire drops to street level. Sometimes it won't do it until the drivers side front tire drops but it does pop just about everytime. Will also pop occasionally when turning (left turn) into a parking spot at low speed. Does this sound like a ball joint?  :idk:  Or something worse...  :worms:  The car has 68K on it now.

Could be, but that it sounds like uneven loading of the suspension causes it reliably, I'd also check the anti-roll bar links, and even the door striker.  I remember reading about loose door strikers causing a popping noise from time to time.

It's definately not the striker. Could be the uneven loading but I'd think some other people might have complained about it in the past and I don't remember reading any. On the other hand this would be the best thing because it means I don't have a problem!

I can get it up in the air. What would I be looking for exactly if it is a ball joint?

Sway bar end link.

Same as for Sol Asylum - what would I be looking for if this is the cause?

With the ball joint you could look for separation when the tire is hanging.
You can also grab the tire at 12 and 6 and see if there is any play up and down.

With the end links you would want to make sure there is no binding in its motion.

What Elff said, also listen for the noise as you raise the car up.

Remove or disconnect one end link and go through the same chassis loading scenario.  It it doesn't clunk anymore, one or both of them are bad.
