Well, the OEM tested ok. The new one is in, sort of. Remember that dropped bolt I mentioned? No where to be found. Off to the parts store for another bolt.

Probably lodged somewhere in the engine bay.  Don't worry, it'll fall out around 5 miles away from home when you don't notice it.

Not to worry. The Mrs insisted on genuine GM fasteners. She crawled around and found it. The car is back together. Test driven. Temp topped at 225* Not happy with that. Will test drive again during halftime. Hopefully nothing more than an air bubble.

Right one was the OEM.

You still have a bubble, let it cool down for several hours.  Pull the hose off the front left top part of the engine, lift the reservoir and let the air bubble out until it's coming out clear (no bubbling).  This will have to be done 3 or 4 times to get the air pockets out.

Thanks Joe. I keep hoping air bubble is all it is. Also, after removing the OEM thermostat, the Stant number I referenced above is an exact replacement part.

Good to know, Thanks, Rogue.  Amazon has this (Stant 14698) for under $18 (w/free shipping Prime or +$35)

Hi Everyone,

I purchased a 2009 Saturn Sky Redline about 1 year ago.  My t-stat started sticking closed so I purchased the Stant XACTSTAT t-stat through Amazon (part number 48628). This t-stat is supposed to keep the engine at a more consistent temperature. Fortunately, I found kappaperformance and this post that lists procedures to perform the job.  I'm used to the old GM V-8 where the t-stat is front and center in the engine bay.  So now I had the directions but I wish I had seen the recommendation to purchase the AC Delco t-stat prior to ordering the Stant because I was starting this job Saturday night when all the parts stores were closed.  I thought how bad could the Stant t-stat be?  Well here's how bad.  Even with my old t-stat sticking which only happened at startup, the hottest my engine got after opening was around 205 degrees.  That's with the A/C on and 100 deg outside temperatures.  With the Stant t-stat normal engine temp is now between 210 to 215 degrees.  If I'm in stop and go traffic the temp will rise to about 235 deg.  So now as everyone has stated in this post,  I will be replacing the Stant t-stat with the OEM t-stat. :banghead:

I did not.  I was looking for information about the size and location of the hole but couldn't find anything.  Without good information, I was afraid of messing up the thermostat.

The hole is to help remove air.  90% chance you have air in the lines.   Still good to remove the Stant and go with the Delco.  There is a pick of the hole somewhere.  I've drilled several over the years.  Small hole, 1/8" or 3/16" should do it.  DDM may have a picture?

This thread on another forum may be of some help?  I've never been part of THAT forum, so I don't know how reputable it is :)

DDM Dave drills a 1/16" hole in the thermostat when installing. I don't know that the size makes a great deal of difference though as long as air can pass through it.

I'll say that much larger will make it really difficult to warm up in the winter.  I'm not sure what size I drilled, but before this winter I'll be pulling it out and replacing with a thermostat with a much smaller hole.

Well fortunately for me, I live in San Antonio and don't have to worry about cold winters!

Thanks for all the info everyone, I'll drill the hole in the AC Delco t-stat before I install..

I'm confused. Where do you drill a hole and why?

You drill the hole to allow air to pass through preventing an overheat condition and to allow you to easily purge air from the system. The attached picture is from the web and not mine but it'll give you an idea as to where to drill the hole. Drilling the hole is actually a pretty common practice with a lot of cars and some thermostats come with a small hole already in them.
Just be sure to get the AC Delco thermostat.

Also make sure that were you drill the hole will not be covered by a seal or gasket.

Yeah that would be a good idea, if it's covered it's not going to do much good. Keep it away from the edge and you should be okay.

Here's a picture that I found on Skyroadster.com. Hope it helps.
I used this as a guide to replace my thermostat (09 Sky R/L). It worked out well. No problems with air in the system. I did use a AC Delco thermostat.
The Sky runs about 194 - 196 degrees in the Florida heat.
