Got my Amazon water pump holding tool today. Ordered it with the free shipping and went to my US address and picked it up.

Hopefully I don't need it any time soon...

Didn't know you bought one.

BTW, I have two of the round ones for the mod meet raffle.  (not the half size holder.)  I also have a new water pump for the raffle.

Well, it looks like I'm going to be testing the validity of Dave's instructions in about 10 days.  Dee's Coupe is taking a leak on my garage floor.  BAD GIRL!!!!.  Ordered a replacement thermostat also.  I'm going to attempt to do this without pulling the turbo.  I wonder how many busted knuckles I'll have and how much beer it will take...

That sucks. As there is a lot of speculation these days that the pump lasts longer if the check valves are installed but I'm not so sure that's the case

What mileage does Denise have on the car? Touch wood I haven't had an issue with mine yet but I do have the holding tool just in case. Let us know how it goes with those instructions and good luck.

Not sure that the '09s had the check valves from the factory.

Yeah neither am I Mark...

EDIT: it's clear after reading the TSB again (TSB 10-06-02-001) that the 09 did NOT come with the check valves? I have adjusted my post above accordingly.

I hear that driving around with no front license plate in a state that requires one causes water pumps to leak.  :poke:

The plate was reinstalled on both cars that night.  It must have wore out the pump before then and we didn't see the spill until now.  I did notice the smell in the garage thought but didn't see anything.

I hear 4 wheeling can cause water pump failure

  The instructions were good except for the following tips.

  • Had to remove the LV Brace (blocks access to the cover on the front of the engine).  Turbo elbow and heat shield and right hood gas support rod (for ease of access).
  • One of the 3 bolts to the thermostat manifold was a challenge to get to and I didn't want to fight putting it back together so I dropped the exhaust and pulled the CAT.
  • After removing the disconnects for the heater core, I also couldn't get the hoses off the manifold so I just pulled it out of the car all together.
  • The rigid tube going into the back of the water pump was tight and took some prying to get it to come off.
  • Several harness in the front of the engine were temporarily moved out of the way to allow for access.
  • Water pump sprocket gear holding tools is indexed.  Had to turn it to position on gear and housing bolts were all visible.  Then installed.
  • Once the water pump bolts were removed, I couldn't get the assembly flipped around to remove it.  I was able to remove the 4 bolts and **** a stud **** to take the cover off (instructions stated 4 bolts.  You will clearly see 5 in the photo.  As the cover came off, the two guide pins fell.  There is no way to prevent this.  I lost one.  Once I had the cover off, the pump would still not come fit through the opening.
  • Removed bolt for power steering reservoir to help get hoses out of the way of the water pump access, still couldn't get it out.
  • Opted to pull the turbo for access.
Hindsight: Drop exhaust, pull cat and turbo.
Pictures coming

OK I am trying to understand what is going wrong here.  I have a coolant leak, though I haven't actually found it yet, but it is in the area of the water pump.

Is the water pump actually failing? or is it just the seals? What is the failure?

The instructions call for replacing the thermostat, should this be done as a matter of course even though the temps are with in the normal range?

I am getting too old for this.

Alan

Odds are the coolant is pooling on a frame rail or somewhere so it doesn't hit the ground, happened to DeepBlueGXP I believe. If you have a leak in the vicinity of the water pump, you need to change it. The coolant system can be a bugger to get all the air out so while it's not necessary to change the thermostat, it's a great time to do it.

If the pump fails, it would obviously be the seals that have failed but those seals aren't serviceable. The entire unit has to be replaced.

The water pump can still pump water even if the seals leak a little.  So to answer your question, yes if the seals are leaking your water pump is failing since the seals are part of the pump.

The reason to replace the t-stat is that since you already have things apart and the system drained it's easy to do the t-stat at the same time.  I believe there is also some history of the t-stat failing shortly after a water pump gets replaced but it's your call if you do it at the same time or not.
