Stealth spoiler
« on: March 08, 2013, 02:22:39 AM »
I didn't want to spend the $$$ on the RK Sport spoiler. So, I figured I'd keep a look out for something that might work instead. Well, I happened upon this last night. A "banana" spoiler from a Dodge Stealth for $40. The one I bought is red, but I'm attaching different sample pictures. I'll have it painted black or white. I haven't decided. I will need to modify the attachment pillars to sit flush with the trunk lid. I think I want it so that the spoiler's leading edge is tilted down some. I may be able to have the center attachment pillar sit in the spot where the XM antenna is and also run the spoiler's third brake light wire through that same hole. Another mod project to do this summer...

Will it affect the opening of the trunk?

GJ, if I mount it where the center attachment post sits over the XM antenna spot then it will definitely clear. If I opt to mount it farther back, I'll have to watch the clearance to ensure it doesn't hit the rear bumper cover.

Not if he attaches it to the fenders too.

Sure thing, Elff. It's going to have to wait though. I'm still on-site in CT for a project. I won't be home for another month or so. I'll take pictures and post dimensions of the spoiler though.

I read this thread title wondering why anyone would want a spoiler that was stealthy

Then I read the post and realised it was the exact opposite!

A possible scenario.

One of these mounted on the back of a Solstice and due to some material flaw, one of the mounting bolts snapped inducing a rotational moment which snapped the other side at about 120 mph.  Since it's shaped like a boomerang, it whooshed (yes, that is a technical term, don't ask) through the air in an elliptical path. As the Solstice was traveling on a very large sweeper turn, the spoiler whooshed back and hit the Solstice in the windshield/windshield frame/bumper/hood/wing mirror; major damage to the car.

So, what would an event like this be called ?

Well, considering that both aftermarket spoilers from RK sport are shaped like boomerangs for the Sky and Solstice, I find it highly unlikely that the Stealth spoiler would be any different given the correct attachment points. And because I am a field engineer, I'm sure I won't under-engineer the custom brackets to hold this thing down. However, in the unlikely event your scenario would arise, any car to the rear would have a boomerang to the windshield.

The one on Randy's car is actually from another Dodge, the Intrepid ;)

Initial pics with the brackets removed. I think it looks pretty good. Plus, the integrated brake light still works (I have it removed in the pics).

The color match is a little off, but otherwise it seems to fit well.  I'd have a chat with your painter.

The color matches the brake lights and the white dust matches the rest of the exterior.
