Hi people.
« on: May 07, 2013, 11:26:24 AM »
On 5/1/13 I bought my first American car- its got some flaws but the dealer has agreed to fix them. (wheel bearings or cv shafts need replacing) A 2007 Solstice GXP in Mysterious.

I've always wanted a convertible and I was down to three choices. They were the Miata, S2000 and Solstice/Sky. I ended up with a slight problem finding s2000s in my price range that weren't beat to pieces or riced out, and the Miata just didn't have the power I was looking for. Fuel economy wasn't a big concern, but I wanted to get at least 20 mpg city (rated). Any more than 4 cylinders was unnecessary. I also didn't want to go so old to the point where I couldn't get financing.

I came from the mazda world most recently owning a '12 Mazdaspeed3 that got whacked a few times too many, so I got rid of it (hence the screen name). We had something that you might be familiar with called the Cobb AccessPort. What tuning solution would you recommend for the LNF and why?

I'll update this post with pictures of the solstice after work.

Welcome,  there is a list of supporting vendors down the right side of the main screen.  You will find several tuners there.  I lot of us use HPTuners to maintain the tunes we get from those tuners.

Welcome to the forum, it's great to have you here

I just the other day bought and have yet to install the ever popular Wester's Tune. As a supporting member here you get $200 off the cost of that tune and lots of other benefits. The Wester's tune is installed and maintained, as Critterman said, by HPTuners.

What's the issue you are having with the car regarding the wheel bearings or cv shafts? I hope you get them sorted out soon.

Just trying to do my part...

Welcome! Sadly, I don't think we have anything quite like the Access Port for our platform. Cobb is a great group of folks. They've even been nice enough to allow my Kappa on their rack a time or two (got the thumbs up on our suspension setup from them too ).

Sounds like you'd fit in well in my neighborhood! We have a number of rotaries hanging around on any given weekend. Been helping the Neighbor right across from me put his FD back together after losing an apex seal, shelling a rotor, housing, and end plate.

Enjoy your new ride! Can always stuff a 3 rotor in there one day. More than enough room for a 20b under our hood.

There is a noise coming from outside the cabin of the car that sounds like a baseball card in bike spokes, but it's inconsistent. the brakes work, but have a lot of resistance. The noises are mostly heard when cold, so I think clutch if not wheel bearings or cv shafts.

Or it could be the high pressure fuel pump which is normal.  Does it sound like it's coming from the base of the windshield usually when the engine is cold?

Is it mostly in tight turns at low speeds?  If so have your rear checked, especially the clutch packs.

Wouldn't hurt to have the dealer check to see if the diff seal recall applied to your car and if so that it was complied with.

It is typically at low engine speeds, but sounds like its coming the center of the body now. I have the car going in tomorrow.

When i hit the gas it goes away. the speed increases with the rpms as it should.

Sounds like the noise you describe might just be the high pressure fuel pump, as has been suggested.  It's situated on the left rear of the engine near the base of the windshield.  People are pointing you toward differential issues because the diff (particularly the pinion seal) is a common problem with these cars.  Haven't heard of many people having problems with CV joints or hubs, though.

Enjoy the new ride, and welcome to the board.  You'll find a great bunch of guys and gals here!

Incidentally, the HPFP noise is normal, unless it's excessively loud.  Might behoove you to find some folks in your area with LNF-equipped cars to compare.

Recall was performed when car was nearly new, 2100 miles on the clock at that point.

Sorry for the double post- There is something lodged in the catback exhaust, sounds like an excuse to upgrade. According to my mechanic the wheel bearings are not needing replacement, the clutch is good, and he is led to believe (by moving the exhuast and listening for the described noise) that the noise is indeed coming from inside the exhaust.

There have been issues with stock cats.  Do you still have the stock exhaust system?  You can't go wrong with a Solo system.

This is what I intend to do, If the stock cats are anything like the garbage on the Mazdaspeed3s, then they are junk. I'll probably just go with a Solo Catback, for now. The "Street Race" exhaust Seems like a good mix of budget and power. I was quoted almost double including tax and labor for the oem part, lol.

You might look and see if the cat is still covered under warranty, the emissions system has a different warranty then the powertrain.

Where are those pictures at?  The Romanian hasn't seen this thread yet but the clock is ticking.

Cat warranty will only replace with stock, but you could always sell that to offset costs of new HF

I'm at the dealership again, the dealer wants to inspect the exhaust, I told them they can't cut it up unless they plan on replacing it.
