I think it's time to sell: sold
« on: July 23, 2013, 07:08:25 AM »
Hi guys... I think it's time to sell my Kappa. But I want to hear everyone's thoughts.

1) May not need a second car: We are going to move across the country a year from now. I want to try to purge as much crap as possible before we move. When we move I'll be driving for work daily whereas now I just take the train and drive my car maybe once or twice a month only when Lindsay and I have to go out at the same time. Maybe we can go one car only until we move and then I can buy something where we move instead of having to move a car.

2) If we need a second car, right now we have only one that can handle kids. Lindsay won't learn to drive stick, so if I need to take the baby somewhere, she can't drive. So if we did need a second car, Lindsay needs to be able to drive something.

3) If we have a second kid, we will need two kid friendly cars, but how soon?  Even a 911 can handle a car seat. Kid #2 will probably happen in 2 years or so. When will the babies really start needing to go to two different places at the same time? If they travel together all the time, one baby car will do. But once they are old enough to be doing their own activities, like sports, we will need two car seatable cars.

4) I'm getting sick of the uncomfortable ride of my Sky. Maybe I'm getting old or just spoiled by the Audi which feels great but also handles great...

5) I want something with paddles and automatic rev matching. VW DSG on the lower end, Cayman or 911 on the high end. Even a Vette or Camaro with tuned trans can handle it nicely.

6) Haven't been on the track for 2 years. The Sky was always a pain on the track and I still am not comfortable with it. Brakes are still overheating, ECU still has problems. I could never just enjoy driving on the track. Tons of guys bring completely stock Porsches to track days and have no problems and it doesn't harm the warranty! Track alternatives can range from track days, to go karts, to Chump Car or Lemons or buying a dedicated cheap track car like a Miata, but that sounds like a lot of work so not sure.

7) Is the car going to hold value? I went to cars.com and I felt that the values were pretty high. Is it starting to become a collectible?

8) I don't care about huge power anymore. My car was too fast on the track. Its more fun to drive a slow car fast than a fast car slow. Even on the street I am less aggressive (probably from being a dad) and I can have a lot of fun flinging the Audi around with lower power. The Subaru BRZ is very temping cuz it's got skinny tires and can fling around and be a lot of fun. MX5 also fits into this category.

9) If I sell is anyone here interested in the car with the mods or do I have to put it back to stock?

Would love to hear from you all.

It's difficult to advise someone else on what choices to make because it's not our life.  Which means...you have to decide on what's best for you and your family.  While we like Kappa's, they are just cars, and cars are just devices that can be replaced.

Having said that, the only valid reason not to replace a car is if you feel you'll eventually regret it and will never be in a position to replace it again.

It sounds like there are a lot of compelling reasons for you to sell.  If money is not the issue, and you are attached to the car, definitely keep it.  Otherwise, it does not hurt to try and sell it to see if you can get what you would want for it.  I might be interested in the wheels.

Not sure that its the best idea to try to sell your car, but you do make many valid points. You have taken a lot of time to mod and get the car where you want it.

Now if you are unhappy with it, by all means, let it go and move on to something else.

As far as value, not sure where your mileage is at, but that seems to be a killer on a lot of these sale ads. if you have 60-80k miles, they are only bringing 12-14k. If you have less miles, you can ask more, but it definitely takes a while to get your price. Not a quick flip by any means.

Not sure how much you can replace to stock on your car, but it definitely helps the resale value from what I have seen. To have it "as stock as possible" is a plus. Many of buyers do not want a heavily modded car for a variety of reasons (mostly false reasons). IIRC you have racing seats and a roll bar as well, correct? That is going to be a minus in many buyer's eyes, so definitely replace that with stock if possible. I think the bar was bolt in though, so that should be easy to pull and sell.

Its a difficult decision for sure, however it has seemed that you have been bitten by the Porsche bug, so maybe its time to move up to a 911 turbo? Trust me if its what you really want, just go for it. I don't regret selling my car one bit to get one of my dream cars.

Good Luck with your decision Kenny. You are a smart guy, so make the right choice for yourself, not others!

The problem is that the more I modded the car, the further it got from what I wanted. You get the mod bug and keep going and when things didn't work I just gave up due to lack of interest and time.

Im also looking for recommendations on other cars.

Mine has only 32k miles on it. I'm not worried that much about selling price just curious what they are going for.

If anyone on the forums wants my car with the mods or partial mods, I would certainly give monetary value to take it off my hands without the work of me putting every little thing back. Would be interested to hear interest via PM before I formally post it online.

32k is a good mileage to sell at. You should be able to fetch 16k in stock form.

Modded form is anyone's guess. Do you have a lot of the stock parts at home? seats? etc?

I do agree with helios, you sound pretty set on selling with your reasoning. I didn't hear much in favor of keeping it other than you would be banned from KP ;)

I think u have made up your mind, so good luck with the sale.
Imho on point 1, since u will be driving to work, i believe a car available at your parking that ur wife can drive (and child to fit in its seat) is a must, for emergency  and for the wife to be able to make her own schedule. These were the reasons i bought us a family car (along with the small company car i drive)

I would be looking at a Cadillac CTS coupe and not at Vett's or Porches for the reasons you have mentioned, specially as the family grows.
You could also look into a BMW 135i. The Camaro would also be a good choice.
I would try to offer the SKY as is to the forum members 1st and see if someone will by it.
Good luck.

Try to sell on the forums the way it is or go back as much as you can to stock and sell to the outside world. Then sell the upgrades separately. (JPM seatbelt holders, hint hint)
She's an 09 Brazen GXP.

Covered by Norms Fiberglass, DDM, WERKS, KappaSphere, Trifecta performance, Dejon performance, Solo performance, Magnaflow, Hahn, VDI, B&G, ASAP, WindRestrictor, Gravana, JPM, Santana, Madmod, HID pro, Second Skin Audio, mydipkit, Automotivetouchup.com and Smoothline.

To be or not to be hard, that is the question. I prefer my top off and still hard when I need it.

I was thinking the same thing regarding replacement choice unless the Audi is kid friendly.

Good luck in whatever you decide Kenny. Priorities change... and life happens. Just how it goes!

We have an Audi A4 wagon. Wife's primary car. But if I take kids out she can drive something fun. So deciding how fun/practical the second car will be is definitely being considered.

We will be moving to California, probably SF

Welcome to California Kenny!

CTS wagon.  If you can spring it, go V.  Kid friendly, beats a 911 in a drag race, fits strollers, toys, luggage and more.

Can you post a bit about what y have modded on the car?  My memory is failing.

If our Kappa was an automatic, and the automatic tuning was better like it is on the Corvettes, we would probably keep it. I drove Spiky's automatic tuned, but it didn't feel so great.

(Sorry for the OT but..)

From my experience, the drivability of an auto corvette isn't exactly great once you get a bigger cam and a tune in. The orange vette is a uber PITA to drive in standard "D" mode (could be that the TCM tune is for "full race") I do know the line pressures are ignorantly high to make the shifts SUPER firm. Great for a true racer, but pretty bad for what my dad uses it for. (cruising around town) I could probably make it more liveable to drive in town but I don't think he wants to mess with it because it does work awesome in paddle mode. Very responsive and it will shift when you ask it to. (not just suggestion paddles)

I wouldn't add power to a vette. It actually has too much for me for the track.

I think you can tune the trans to be normal at D and aggressive in another position.
