Is that a recommendation? I would love one but just saw they get under 20mpg highway. Lol

If you drove one you wouldn't care what the gas mileage was. Sure, we joke about going out to dinner and only having half a tank of gas and if we'll make it back home before it runs out, but honestly the mpg isn't an issue. It's more an issue of the tank not really being big enough. The CTS-V gets better mileage than my '08 GMC Sierra, and it gets WAAAAAYYYY better mileage than any full size SUV and there's millions of happy people driving those on the road.

Do yourself a favor and go drive a V. It's a world class supercar for not that much money. Actually, I think it doesn't make the supercar list for one reason only, it doesn't cost enough. I believe it's still the fastest production V/8 sedan and wagon in the world. The magnetic ride shocks are only used in two other cars, the Vette and some Ferrari's. It's a car that can cruise down the freeway smoothly and silently, but stab the throttle and it will lay you back in the seats until 190. Stomp on the brakes and the huge Brembo's will throw you through the window if you're not strapped in tight. 26 position power Recaro's with heat and cooling. Bose 5.1 system with 40GB hard drive and NAV with traffic. Display screen pops up when you put it in reverse to show the backup camera image. Walk up to the car, get in and start it without ever touching a key.

The cars are amazing, and may be a thing of the past soon. I'm afraid the supercharged V/8 isn't gonna be around much longer. There is nothing like the LSA and the LS9 motors, they are incredible and there might not be anything like them if the emissions and gas mileage regulations keep going the way they are. There's also talk of a lower maximum hood height law that may make supercharged V/8's too high for the hoods. We didn't buy the V wagon as a collector car, it's a daily driver for us. With the extremely limited production of them though (V wagons), and what they actually are as far as performance, design and build, I won't be surprised if my son inherits a valuable piece of American muscle. For now, every single time that LSA starts up and roars through that Corsa exhaust, it gives my wife a HUGE smile on her face. Who cares what the mpg is when your car can make you smile every time you start it?

You don't have to convince me to love the CTSV. I have been a huge fan from the start and have recommended them to many people. The fuel economy isn't really stopping me from getting one either. It's the weight. It's a heavy pig and the next version based on the ATS platform should be much better in that category, along with the Camaro and all the other cars moving to that platform.

Also if I do take it to the track I cannot drive I to the limit. It's got too much power. I'm not at the level to drive something like that on a track.

I usually like newer models, but I'm a little afraid of the next generation of the CTS's. I have a feeling they're going to be like the W body cars (Grand Prix, Cutlass, Regal). The 5th generation ('88-'96) models were some of the worst cars GM ever built. Every major component in those cars had chronic issues. The 6th generation ('97-'03) was some of the best cars GM built. Very little problems with most of the major components, and they were just good all-around cars. The 7th generation ('04-'08) were garbage again. Horrible built quality, poor interiors and a bunch of major component issues. The first generation CTS's were pretty cr@ppy cars. The V's weren't bad, but they weren't that great either. Horrible interiors and lots of electronics issues. The second generation CTS's have been pretty darn good cars. Well designed interiors and pretty high build quality. If the 3rd generation CTS's are anything like the current Buick Regal's and LaCrosses's, I won't buy one. Kinda like the R and V body's (Acadia's and Enclave's), great idea and design, horrible dependability. We'll see.

I do like your comment about being too much power for you at the track, that's an impressive comment. It takes a lot of confidence and self-esteem to make a comment like that. I saw that all the time on dirtbikes. Guys would want the biggest, most powerful bikes they could get, and all they did is got hurt or just never learned how to actually ride. It's so much easier to learn to drive (or ride) with a lighter, less powerful car than it is to learn in a bigger car with too much power. I ride a big dirtbike (YZ450), but I spent many years learning how to ride on underpowered little bikes. If you can make an underpowered car or bike turn quick lap times, you've learned how to ACTUALLY drive or ride. A CTS-V is a handful on a track, and anyone that thinks it's a piece of cake to drive one at the speeds it's capable of is ignorant. You're obviously not ignorant!

I loved my 01 Regal GS. That thing was quick (after some work) and was a tank too.

I couldn't drive my modded sky to the limit. I should have put stock tires back. Now I want to embrace the new technology and get a next generation gearbox which is why I am leaning towards something with dual clutch.

I also may never drive on a track again and do karts. Or maybe chump car with something beat up.

For that price you could buy several thousand pounds of Apples too. But you can't put two car seats in the Apple or the Vette, so they are both just garbage for Kenny.

You are talking about this engine that will be used in next year ATS-V?

He needs to "mount" 1-2 babies in that car, I don't think he would like the idea to strap them in the trunk :)

That is a nice engine, however one can get 2011's CTS-V's for less than $50K.

Hi guys... I think it's time to sell my Kappa. But I want to hear everyone's thoughts.

I would hat to see you go, as you are one of the more knowledgeable and helpful members of the forums, and an all around good guy!  With that in mind allow me to play Devil's advocate and address your problems in order.

1) May not need a second car: We are going to move across the country a year from now. I want to try to purge as much crap as possible before we move. When we move I'll be driving for work daily. .  .

Is the car paid off?  If so it cost you nothing to keep it.  Even if you rarely use it, it's nice to have a second vehicle.  What happens if the audi needs repairs or some other problem.  It's nice having a backup.  My cousin runs his own trucking business, I'm sure I can get you a good price on shipping the vehicles across country.

2) If we need a second car, right now we have only one that can handle kids. Lindsay won't learn to drive stick, . . .

She needs to learn to drive stick!  MAKE her learn, if only for "emergencies".  (Let you mom, aunt, dad [whoever she is closest to that know how to drive stick] teach her).  What happens when you drop a wrench on your foot and you need to get to the ER.  How can Linsday take you if the 911 is out blocking the driveway?!?  It's really for her benefit!! I don't see you driving automatics for the rest of your life.

3) If we have a second kid, we will need two kid friendly cars, but how soon?  . . .

This is very easy, don't have a second kid, Problem solved!

4) I'm getting sick of the uncomfortable ride of my Sky . . .

Well who told you to put drag racing seats in your car?!?  Get some memory foam, I hear that stuff is great.

5) I want something with paddles and automatic rev matching. . .

Flappy paddle gearboxes are for lazy people.  Rowing is where it's at!! You're saying you DON'T want to heel toe before entering a turn?!?

6) Haven't been on the track for 2 years. The Sky was always a pain on the track and I still am not comfortable with it. . .

Drive the car for fun, play on the go kart tracks, or build/buy a shifter kart.  Cheaper than a full car, maybe even more fun!

7) Is the car going to hold value? I went to cars.com and I felt that the values were pretty high. Is it starting to become a collectible?

I doubt these are going to be higher than sticker price collector cars.  They were/are cool, but I don't really see a super high demand for them.  The demand wasn't off the charts when they were building them new.

8) I don't care about huge power anymore. My car was too fast on the track. Its more fun to drive a slow car fast than a fast car slow. . .

Disconnect the charge tube going to the turbo!  Now you have a slow car that you can try to drive fast on the track.  Seems like the perfect solution.  When you are done with the track, hook the charge tube back up and drive home really fast.  The added power will really be felt now.

9) If I sell is anyone here interested in the car with the mods or do I have to put it back to stock?

Now you don't have to sell it, so it doesn't matter!

You have to make the decisions that make the most sense.  With 2 kids and a wife impractical cars don't make sense.  Good luck with whatever your decision may be, just do me one favor.  For the Love of all things automotive do NOT buy a minivan under any circumstances!!

 :agree:
With everything stated.

I've barely driven my jeep due to my medical reasons over the past years,  but it is is paid off and I wouldn't get much if I sold it.
It's been useful a couple of times to have.  Now that I am getting better, I am glad I still have it and will get back to competing.
It cost me 3 yearly inspections and comprehensive collision to keep.  which is nothing.

Put the stock seats back into the Sky, reduce the rest of your mods down to the GMPP Tune and FE3 Shocks with LNF ZOK springs and you will be at a very comfortable ride with a power level you will enjoy.

Be careful, the 'twins' seem to be getting a lousy reputation for reliability.

So I think we will get a BRZ and my dad is going to buy my Sky. :)

As TS said, "Be careful".   I had one on order, but got to see one at a Subaru dog & pony show before deliveries started.  My wife and I were so impressed with the quality, :kwh:  that we cancelled our order the next day.  You'd think that the manufacturer would take some care to make sure that the car they were sending around was "impressive".   Our impression was it had a very poorly designed interior, and the materials were cheap (and this was the more expensive "Limited" model).

A friend, who owns a Sky RL, also had one on order at the same dealer, and he cancelled his order after the car arrived and he took it for a test drive.

That dealer currently has 9 brand new BRZs sitting on the lot.   It is getting a reputation as a "problem" car.

YMMV!

That's interesting. I drove one and loved it. I don't tend to care much about interiors. The seating position the seats themselves and the steering wheel felt great. The FRS interior is more plain which I actually prefer but again I just don't care.

I haven't heard about reliability problems. Anything in particular that's been reported?
