Sensitive supercharger
« on: August 10, 2013, 09:22:47 AM »
After 25 K miles of excellent performance from my DDM S/C,  I noticed an uncharacteristic surging under throttle.  My snap diagnosis put the blame on a sticking by-pass actuator.  So, I called Dave and ordered one....

In the meantime, It occurred to me that superchargers are probably a lot more sensitive to incoming air flow than carburetors and I ought to check the air cleaner.  Well, it looked OK...a little dirty, but far from clogged.  Changed it out anyway.

Shazam!   Solved the problem immediately.   So, if you're running a S/C, be advised, they prefer REAL clean air.

Well,  I guess I spoke too soon, or wishful thinking, but while better, the problem is still there.

Symptoms: the S/C spins properly (actually it seems to whine/scream very easily even at low RPM);

                 the boost gage (reading vacuum) shows proper boost (8/9 PSI);

                  BUT...it's more noise than power. I'm not getting the punch it used to produce.

I'm thinking perhaps it's the actuator after all...not closing the by-pass...or...maybe there's a leak somewhere.

Any help would be appreciated...

Does anyone have experience pressurizing the tubes and intercooler to check for leaks?  How is it done?

Here's an update:

No leaks, actuator working properly, no problem with S/C internals.

Turns out I should have checked the simplest first...slipping belt!!
