Missing and not sure what to do.
« on: September 08, 2013, 07:09:43 PM »
So I installed a new coil pack on #2 and all was good til about a month ago. Misses under hard acceleration so I hook up the computer and see

[ECM] P0300 - Engine Misfire Detected (Old) (Immature)
[ECM] P0301 - Cylinder 1 Misfire Detected (Old) (Immature)

So I swap coil pack #1 with #4. Take it out for a spin and cant get it to throw a code again but it still misses. I try looking at the log file after the swap and notice missfires on 1,2 and 3. Not sure what I am looking at.

Any ideas?

How many miles are on the car?

You could be suffering from Carbon build up on the Intake valves.   It's pretty common on Direct Injection vehicles.
BMW uses walnuts to blast and clean them.  They are tough enough to knock off the deposits but soft enough to not score the metal.

85,000
Doesn't that require taking head off?
Would a BG induction cleaning work?

Head stays on...
Remove intake manifold, and close valves to that cylinder. Then blast them with the walnut shell blaster.

Sounds expensive for not being sure that's the issue.

Well a couple years ago I had that same misfire code for 1,2,&3 was still under GM coverage .They told me it was the rings coming apart . GM was going to replace motor . Called 4-5 days later said it was done. GM then to rebuild it. New pistons, rings, valves and then replaced the Turbo . It only had about 12,000 miles on it. Its hard to say what it could be with 85,000 on the clock.

Yup

You could try seafoaming the engine through the throttle body to see if you can clean up the intake valves and reduce the misfires.

Unfortunately, this is an issue that is near impossible to diagnose over the internet.  It could be so many things but with it being random, and knowing the issue with DI engines, I would think Carbon buildup before anything else.  Its so common

It's an engine cleaner specifically designed to help with carbon buildup
GM uses something similar

Elff, what should I order and what vacuum line to use? I "asked Jim" but not sure he will reply anytime soon.

Did you watch the video on the link I sent?
It pretty much explains how to use the Seafoam spray
The only difference on our cars is that you could undo the silicone elbow from the driver side IC Pipe and inject it there.
It actually makes it a little easier on our cars.

So I cleaned it and it seemed to help a little.
This weekend the cel came on but for some reason my hp tuners won't show anything on the dtc window including vehicle info. Rest of the windows work....any ideas on how to fix and determine code? I can hit reset and the light went away so I know it's communicating at some level.

I would suggest you email Bill@hptuners.com for this issue.
They did release a new version just a month or 2 ago.
Maybe upgrading will resolve your DTC display issue.

So I got the update and it worked
[] P0014 - Exhaust Camshaft Position (CMP) System Performance Bank 1 (SES) (Old) (History) (Immature)
[] P0013 - Exhaust Camshaft Position (CMP) Actuator Solenoid Control Circuit Bank 1 (Old) (Immature)
[] P0014 - Exhaust Camshaft Position (CMP) System Performance Bank 1
Now what Mr. Elff?
Both times CEL came on during low speeds after long trip at 70+ MPH

After seeing the codes, I agree with the thread.  Probably the actuator. Cost about $50 if I remember correctly.

Yup
They are cheap.

I believe the thread has the part numbers.  I would suggest calling Tom @Crate Engine Depot for the parts.
He will be able to get them to you the quickest and cheapest
