Car is not starting at all
« on: September 23, 2013, 09:40:16 AM »
So as the title states, a friend of mine has a sky and everything seems to be a go, however his car will not start. It will just turn over and over but never start up. If anything it will just make a huge backfire and then maybe sputter 4 times as if its about to start, but then just keep turning over. It also always seems right when you turn the key off it gets closer to starting. I thought it might be a timing problem from what it seems, but he said all of the timing was ok.

We then proceeded to take the coils and spark plugs off to see if there was any spark. Well it turns out there is but its very intermittent. Is that supposed to be right? I thought it should be just a consistent spark?

Any information on this would be very helpful! thanks guys!

What has been done to the car recently?  Does everything work? Horn, radio etc?  Is the car stolen?
Sounds like a fuel issue if its cranking and sparking, but who knows. Need more details.

Not stolen, everything works, and its spitting fuel out but it seems like everytime we try to start the car its just a huge rich backfire and the car doesnt start

Could be an issue with the ECU.  Any problems before all of this happened, any codes?

Nope car was running great and then all of a sudden it started bogging down and then dies and didnt want to start. and now we are here. The ecu is fine he can do everything but start the car and even got a new ecu in case that was the point and had it paired up via tech 2 and it still wont start.

Crank Position Sensor?? Or the wiring to it?
I had a car a long time ago jump time, when a friend tried to start it repeatedly it damaged the engine.

Broken crankshaft/camshaft sensor? Normally should throw an DTC error, right?

If there is fuel with no start, than that means no spark?

You might also want to check what the fuel pressure is, you might be getting some fuel but not enough.

nope there are no codes that have gone off.
We have already replaced the crank sensor, checked timing and it was in time, could possibly be a cam sensor havent checked that yet. I would think it would throw some kind of code but no, nothing yet.

Is the lock icon staying on in the dash?  May need a key relearn with a new ECM?

Simple and free to try.

Sounds similar to what happened to me in Texas, our turbo shaft split in half causing the oil pressure to drop low where the engine would not fire.  If the Ecotec engine senses to low of an oil pressure it will not fire the engine as a safeguard.

1) I would check the oil level on the dipstick, if it is going low it could be the turbo shaft snapped and its pumping oil into the intercooler piping and filling up the intercooler with oil.
2) Pull the intake off the turbo and check the compressor wheel and shaft to make sure it is in tact.
3) If the above 2 check out okay check the oil level and make sure there is adequate amount of oil in the engine to properly build oil pressure.

hmm ill tell him to try that thats some good advice right there. Only thing is that he doesnt have a stock turbo but a aftermarket one.

As for the new ecm relearn, yes we have had the car relearn the new ecu and done that whole process.

We really need all the information on the car.
What Turbo does he have?
Was it retuned? by who?
Any other changes from stock that we should be aware of?

zzp ported and polished head package. hp tune, 5758 turbo, stock injectors, some bolt ons. its automatic. The car ran perfectly fine on 9psi (just testing stuff) and then one morning it started bogging and then died and never started up again. Engine turns over just fine when trying to start it, but it never really fires. Every now and then itll just make a huge rich pop backfire from what it looks like. (being rich not lean)

Who did all the work?  you might have to revert back to stock, see what happens

a buddies shop on the other side of town, but it shouldnt have anything to do with the build. The built motor ran flawlessly for 30k miles so far. I'm thinking this has to be a timing, or fueling issue?
