NASSM 2014 POCONO RACEWAY INTEREST
« on: October 02, 2013, 08:47:37 AM »
We need your input! The coordinators of the 2014 National are in the process of organizing a special event as part of 2014 NASSM Play and Stay in the Poconos!

Before we proceed any further with the planning, we’d like to gauge your reactions and your level of interest in running the East track at the Pocono Raceway. http://www.poconoraceway.com/about/pocono-raceway-track-rental.html  As you might imagine, there is a significant financial component to hosting a day at the Poconos Raceway and we need to be sure that we have enough interested participants before we move forward.

Please read the following information and post your ideas, comments and thoughts. This thread is about sharing the information we have so that you can make a decision about whether you’d want to sign up.

All information is subject to change.

An all-day High Performance Driving Experience (HPDE) on
Friday, June 20th at the East course of the legendary Pocono Raceway

This is not a competitive event, but it will give you an opportunity to explore your KAPPA's and your capabilities at speed in a relatively safe environment. Passing will occur only on straightaways and with the permission of the driver being passed. For what we estimate now to be $250 you'll get 120 minutes on the track in a group of drivers close to your comfort level of speed and lunch.

The cost estimate will be adjusted based on the number of people indicating interest over the next month. The cost will go down as the number of participants goes up. Payment will not be requested until the level of interest has been determined. We have tried to account for the costs that would be involved and we’ve made our best estimates to account for all the costs, but until we are prepared to go to contract, we cannot get firm quotes.

Before getting on the track you will need to show proof of at least $10,000 of A.D. & D. insurance. Liability insurance is included. Your car will be safety inspected and you will need to have, or can share, a Snell 2005 (Expires 1/1/2017) or a Snell 2010 (Expires 1/1/2022)

If you want to participate, we need to hear from you by November.

Let's start hearing from you!

Your car will be safety inspected

What are the requirements to pass the safety inspection at this track?
Especially considering our cars are convertibles with zero head protection

I am with elff I do not see how the raceway will sanction this event with our convertibles.
Also no insurance company will pay in my opinion if there is any injuries or vehicle crashes.

Fully appreciate your concern, the track understands the our cars , they are fine with it if we can ensure appropriate insurance coverage - the insurance companies have been contacted and we are in discussions with them about this very issue. In 2011 in Austin we were able to offer an HPDE as were at the Harris Hill Road Course with no roll bars, and I helped organize that event, which is why I am assisting with this one.

We have also been in touch with another club with convertables and no roll bars that has done this, and did it at Poconos and they have been great about sharing information with us and we are doing all the needed due diligence to square up details. So please bear with us while we confirm all of that important information and know we had the same concerns - but have gained enough comfort to begin the stage of asking about the level of interest from the community.

As ripple said, we triple checked our information before we headed off on this venture. No sense in putting the cart before the horse.

Del-Val Club has been successfully running a roll bar free, two day event for the past ten years and actually helped us to navigate the raceway labyrinth. We feel confident that this can happen with enough responsible participants.

This is a list of safety checks:

Interior Mirror, Steering Linkage, Seat Belts., Suspension & Shocks
Fire Extinguisher (Recommended) Wheel Bearings, Pedals in Good Condition,   Metal/Flexible Brake Lines, Brake Pedal FIRM Brakes Bled Recently, Emergency Brake Operable, Rims in Good Condition, Stop Lights, Battery Secure, No Fluid Leakage, Electrical Harness, No Cracked Glass, Relays Secure, No Excessive Rust, Fan Belt, Exterior Mirror, Throttle Linkage, Windshield Wipers, Oil & Gas Line Secure, Gas Cap Secure, Hood & Deck Lids Secure, Tire Pressures: Front/Rear, Brake Fluid Changed,
Oil Leaks, Sufficient Brake Pads.

ebay has SA2005 helmets on sale for $115 - $30.00 - the cost seems to depend on your head size, whether BIG or tiny.

I've got a 1990 BMW that doesn't start and has four flat tires. God only knows if the gas is shellac....

Thanks LV. If we don't have enough participants, we won't be moving forward with it. It would be cost prohibitive.

Hmmm... I have no reason to believe I'd fail the safety check, but I also can't guarantee that I'd pass.  "Brakes Bled Recently" - no, I don't do this...But I don't know that it is necessary (?).  2009 Sky w/13k miles... should be OK (?)

What, are you talking about the nice racing Kappa which I drove there???
For me it was good sitting "low", actually finally I had the right height in a Kappa, I never had problems not being tall enough but I can't say the other way around :)

You all are envious because of that car, especially GJ not being tall enough for it.

On Topic note: If I will be attending to 2014 NASSM I will be more than interested to have a drive on Pocono. (I think I qualify for this, I purge my brake liquid frequently  )
