Title: "Don't comment here" - Kelu
Post by: Gentleman Jack on January 06, 2021, 01:52:37 PM
The search begins for next vehicle:

Currently, my wife is driving a 2004 Infiniti FX35. We have had dozens of cars in the last 5 years, but this one has been with us for a while. Just hit 140,000 miles and it runs and looks great. Very minor wear on interior and a few nicks and such on the exterior as one would expect from a 16+ yr old car.

What’s next?  Here is a list of vehicles my wife has expressed interest in recently: (probably not a complete list)

Porsche Cayman
Genesis G90 / G80
Volvo XC90
Audi SQ5
Porsche Macan S
Porsche Cayenne E hybrid
Volvo V60/ V90
Kia Stinger GT
Porsche Panamera

Her requirements:
2012 or newer
Must have modern features like back up camera, phone integration, etc. she also likes the idea of blind spot monitors and all around camera views

My requirements: let’s be honest, nothing I say matters. I don’t want to spend more than $15k, but realistically let’s say $35k max all in (tax, title etc) so about $30k purchase price.

Porsche Cayman is the most sexy car by far ...
Genesis .. since when Koreans are making luxury cars??? ... don't know it I can't comment it
Volvo not anymore since were bought by Chinese
Audi SQ5 .. nice car but meeeh... better his Porsche cousin
Porsche Macan S ... second best sexy car, I think this suits second best to a lady ... I didn't meet the subject ... shame on you OP
Porsche Cayenne E hybrid ... not for a lady
Volvo V60/ V90 ... what did I say about Volvo?
Kia Stinger GT ... I liked how the car looks but that's all about it
Porsche Panamera ... man's car not for ladies unless they like coupe limousines

So? When can we meet the owner?

I don't know, GJ is capable of literally anything.

I mean he got me banned once.

Good point, you're asking me?

Can you get any of those 2012 or newer in that price range other than the Kia?

I bought a Kia Sportage in October and joined a Kia sight.  The only issues I see on the K5 is that there is an issue with the wireless Auto Play.  Depending on the model level you should get most of those options, plus it flies sideways in the air.

I never said Kelu couldn't comment.  Kelu told everyone else not to comment here.  You people need to learn Engrish.

Don't comment here Kelu

is not the same as

"Don't comment here" - Kelu

You are all breaking Kelu's rules.

You can meet her anytime!  Several KPF members have met her.  We had plans to come explore Europe in 2020... but that didn't happen.  Not happening in 2021 either from the looks of things.

Cayman - only draw back is - it most likely won't make it up our driveway.  If it doesn't, that is a deal breaker.

Genesis is BEAUTIFUL.  Maybe the most comfortable back seat I have ever sat in was the huge Genesis.  the 5.0 puts out solid power and so many features for the money.  Plus a great warranty.

Volvo - they are pretty.  Haven't driven one.

SQ5 - quick tune on the supercharged 3.0 makes it a beast.

Macan S - my brother has one.  different engine from SQ5. twin turbo v6 rather than supercharged v6.  very tunable,  Very fun to drive.

Cayenne E-hybrid - she can make it to work on only electric and charge for free at work most days.  Nice perk on an otherwise fun car.  Plus - uses the same 3.0 supercharged motor as SQ5, so quick tune makes big difference.

Volvo - see above

Stinger GT - 3.3T might be fun.  I like the Genesis better.

Panamera - not sure what you mean, but if she likes it, I'm good with it.  I think this is lowest on the list.

Critter - I think you would be surprised.  All of the cars on the list are well within the price range except the Panamera and Cayenne (because we don't want the base model v6), and with reasonable miles.  Some still with factory warranty.  Looked at a 2017 SQ5 with 40k miles and extended 100K warranty was private sale listed at $35K- just slightly above budget.  Easy to find most of these within budget.

I'm out of beer  :(  :(  :(

That really was a great day.  I am so happy we were able to get that taken care of for you.  I've learned in my life, most times you just have to ask the question, be polite, and a bit persuasive. It has taken me far in life.

As for being out of beer - I can definitely help.  I have lots of beer.  I have several stouts in the 16% range, and at least one over 20%.  They are big bottles, so I need someone to help me drink them.

I also have a few bottles of this mystery "olive oil" that was shipped from Illinois... It is NOT beer.

Yet another example of me not following rules.  It's worked out well for me too, so far.

By the way it was malt vinegar and coffee flavoring, olive oil is flammable and thus hazmat restricted.

The wife and I have owned 2 Hyundai Genesis Coupes.  They were great cars, incredibly reliable and a steal for the money.
I am not sure how much the new Genesis line is, but if it has the same reliability and even better interior aesthetics,  Id say go for it.
I like the Kia Stinger and hear it's pretty darn fast, but don't know much more
I believe both the Genesis and Kia should have part or all of the car with a 100,000 mile warranty.

I do not like Porsches.  Aside from purchase price, if you can not get a warranty with them, there is a potential of a giant repair bill in your future for something random.
With your price suggestions, I would avoid them.

Elff,

We too have owned a Hyundai and Kia, and I completely agree with your experience with them.  Absolutely reliable, great value for what they are, more tech than their competitors (price points considered).  We are guessing the big sedans will be similar.

When it comes to Porsche - we actually have opposite experience.  We had zero reliability problems with our, even used and out of warranty.  The one issue that did happen (coolant tube) was immediately repaired at zero cost by Porsche as it was a rare but known issue.  They are (or least ours was) very well built and solid.  The repairs (maintenance) is only mildly more expensive than other brands, but in line with most "luxury" brands.  The infamous IMS failure not withstanding, the Cayman is regarded as a pretty reliable little sports car.

I can't believe what I'm going to say, they are nice cars, except getting bad luck (remember my experience with Touareg) if the repairs are not becoming a money pit they worth for what they are.

Hives?  Why for?  I get that SUVs are not everyones cup-o-tea, but some of the performance numbers for some of these cars are solid.  I could lay waste to your new (old) 4 cyl Mustang with any of them :)  HAHAHAHAHAHAHA

If you haven't found something yet I hear Tiger has a demonstration Genesis with some slight blemishes he could probably get you a deal.  I hear the legroom is kind of lacking but then I am a little taller than you so it may not matter.

I don?t need Tigers crunchy car...  someone decided to make our car look like his.
Chevy Tahoe driver forgot to pay attention as the freeway came to a stop. Aimee was driving and we had the puppies with us. He his us at about 30 mph as we were nearly stopped. To his credit, he saved our lives by swerving left at the last second and not hitting us square on. He continued on through us in to the car in front of us. Aimee handled it amazing. Dogs are both good from what we can tell and no one needed an ambulance.

Can?t seem to add a pic right now.

We are narrowing it down.
Due to our driveway, we can not get a sedan / wagon / coupe. We tried. They all scrape. No sense getting a nice car and beating it up everyday.
So- SUV it will be.

List:
SQ5
Macan S or turbo
Cayenne S E-hybrid
GLC / GLE AMG

We eliminated the F Pace after driving it.

Any other thoughts along those lines?

Get one of these and have it converted to electric.  It should be able to handle your driveway.

We got the call last Friday that the car is officially gone.  Payout is just under $8k.  Not bad considering we bought that car in 2014 for $13,500 I think.  We are borrowing our friends BMW Z4 for now and trying to figure out what we want.  We are pretty sure we will end up getting two vehicles.  Some type of SUV-ish thing for road trips with the dogs, and something fun for her to daily.  The Z4 is surprisingly fun - especially since it is the base engine, 3.0 inline 6.  That motor really runs.  Somehow, it gets up and down the driveway.  Can't go straight on, but slight angle gets the nose up quick enough.  approach angles, short nose over tire and zero rear overhang all seem to work together.

Anyone selling anything interesting?

Well, it has happened.

Background: our beloved fx35 was totaled by an idiot on the freeway. Mrs. GJ was driving and we got rear ended by a Chevy Tahoe. Both cars totaled. We are fine.

That was March 5.

We finally bought another vehicle. We move slow 🤪

I take delivery of this on Monday
[attachimg=1]

Very similar build to the jeep I used to own.
2004 Jeep TJ Rubicon
37" Tires
6" AiRock kit (https://offroadonly.com/shop/swayloc/jeep-swayloc/jeep-wrangler-tj-swayloc/airock-combo-wrangler-tj-4-0l-includes-york-on-board-air-and-swayloc/)
Sway Loc air activated sway bar disconnect
Separate Drag link and Tie Rod steering.
Rubicon Express Long Arm kit
It's got a little bit of trail rash and some surface rust, but is in great shape.
Is coming with both a Hard Top and a soft top, and a bunch of spare parts.
I know the jeep and the owner, I'll put about $4000 into it to make it exactly how I want it

Meeting up with Shiny and Reed 1 week from today to do some mild off roading at Rausch Creek.

It's still on order, but with all of their issues, who knows when it might arrive.  I've also realized, it's not going to be a good rock crawler, which is what I like to do when offroading.  Its good for sand and dirt, but IFS does not articulate.

Im keeping the Alfa Romeo.

At least the carbon bodywork won't rust through.  My one-time pride & joy, an AlfaSud Sprint Veloce, rusted through the sills within 2 years from new :(

Elff how's the new to you Jeep?  How are Reed and Shiny doing?

Had my Jeep out this weekend, technically I stayed on the road but Illinois roads are pretty much trails given the way they maintain them.

We had a blast 4wheeling last weekend.  Both are doing very well.
Shiny is trying to book me every weekend to go 4wheeling.  She is addicted.
I need some time to button up some things on the jeep and get it inspected.

Today I installed new 315/75r16 tires and put in the rebuilt front shocks.   It really tightened up the street handling and going down 1 tire size will significantly preserve my drivetrain.
Also removed the hard top and cleaned up the interior in preparation for all new floor carpets, mats and a cool soft top/tonneau combination.

Im gonna try to avoid that with this one.

At the moment I have 2 things to address before I really go hard core rock crawling.
Rear locker isn't working. Not sure why yet, but will figure it out.  I think it's the air line.
Rear Flex brake line is not tied to the frame and might not be long enough.  It's just waiting to be ripped off.
Easy fix and will order spares because they are good to have.

Where are the hooks for the rope ladder?

I use a portable trampoline. Rope ladders are so 2017

My Jeep would cause global warming if we drove it out your way.

Speaking of climate problems those forest fires out your way are causing us to have hazy days for about the last week.  Damn Californians must not care about the environment outside of their state!  I wish they would get done making smores and put their fires out already.  It's kind of hot out right now why do they think they need a fire anyway?

Thanks, It's even better now.  I cleaned up the frame rails, painted them with some rust paint, repainted the gas skid and repainted the diamond plate under the doors.   This week, the wife is going to do a major paint correction.  The paint has some nice flake in it, but it's all oxidized.  It should really look nice after that.  I have to move the flex part of the rear brake line, and that is the last thing it needs to be off road safe.

With how well Jeeps hold their value, plus the fact that the used car market is out of control, you will have a hard time finding a good deal right now

I think you could say that about any vehicle at the moment.  I have been looking at used trucks and what you used to pay for something with 100k on the clock will have 250-300k

Critter - Just picked up a pick up with 38K miles for $3,800!

1999 Dodge Dakota RT
Black, Regular Cab
38k miles, one owner

There are deals out there still.  Just have to be open to possibilities and ready to pounce.  Keep some cash handy for a deposit and go see the truck as soon as you see it listed.

That would be his problem  :)  and he would still have to get back.  But I would foot the bill for dinner.

450 for gas
250 for room
100 for McDonalds

800 or so to get it here, plus then Grayhound home probably another 150 plus meals.   About 1200 or so.  Guess I should offer a bit more.

450 for gas isnt even close. It would be easily over $1,000. Figure 2600 miles and 10mpg at best.

Why does that truck get such poor gas mileage?

My Jeep on 37s got better than that.

We cleaned up the interior and installed new Carpet and mats
[attach=1]
[attach=2]

Installed some heated LED Projector lights
[attach=3]

Did a first pass on paint correction and installed a nice Summer Top Combo
[attach=4]

[attach=5]

I am replacing the sway bar disconnect system, and while I am doing that I will sand down and repaint the front bumper to get rid of the surface rust and install my winch.
Then it is ready for Rock Crawling.

Credit goes to the wife for the paint work.  She is a master at that.
Sadly we still have to do some wet sanding.   The imperfections are from tar and bugs not being cleaned off, vs rock chips.  We are hoping some we sanding will cut that back, but I may just get the hood and windshield resprayed and bail on the rest since it's still a rock crawler.  Still, you have to be within a couple of feet to notice the imperfections.

I am very impressed with the color.  It's really nice and changes depending on the light.  Here it is with some good light

This, plus 20 years?.
I would guess, if driven very carefully, 12-13mpg would be achievable.  But it can also melt off the tires and go nowhere for a while too. It?s really a stupid truck. And I have two of them now, and three overall. It?s not a good commuter car 😳.

Elff that Jeep is to clean looking to take rock crawling.
Title: Re: "Don't comment here" - Kelu
Post by: elff on August 02, 2021, 06:10:23 PM
It has both engines listed, so I wasn't sure if it applied to both.

As far as the jeep, it's not perfect, which is good, because if it was, I probably would not take it rock crawling.

Had my SwayLoc system arrive today. Will work on that this weekend.   Still waiting on the rear bumper, some replacement heim joints and new lug nuts.   A couple of them had the caps pop off, so I need 2 different socket sizes to change 2 tires.

I can't believe how much has been done to it in 3 weeks.  Man it's nice having a jeep again.

So we did some vehicle re-arranging and now Monica is driving the following.

Crazy thing is, we "sold" our leased Ford Escape to this dealer with 9 payments remaining and used it to get a $4000 deposit.
So the used car market is still fairly insane.  I probably could have gotten a little more, but that was painless especially considering the complexity of paying off a lease and getting the title to give to a private seller.  More of just a delay, but who wants to fork over 5 digits worth of money on vehicle in which they don't immediately get the title?
Anyhow, here is the required picture
