Many of you know GM dropped all support for Drift racing, leaving 3 Drift teams with Solstice drift cars with out a factory sponsor, I expect Ford will follow suite, and Mopar too. Hyundai did commission Rhys Millen Racing to build a rally /drift car. They have announced they will not sponsor Rhys to Drift in the car, doesn't mean Rhys won't drive it it just won't be factory sponsored. He may stick with the car he won the World Championship in, the Solstice, he is still sponsored by Red Bull, and Bridgestone.

I would love to see Rhys stay in the Solstice. I just hope drift racing has enough cash put into it to stay alive. My cousin is going to drive in Canada this season for all his drift comps since Nopi has crapped the bed this year.

I am pretty sure Formula D will keep going, there are even some new sponsors this year, Verizon has stepped up and will be sponsoring Daiyiro Yoshihara, he drove the RMR GTO last year, rumor has it he will be in a Lexus on Team Falken. Rhys still has Red Bull and Bridgestone, so he will be driving for sure. Circuit City is gone, but Castrol is still sponsoring the series, and our buddies at Discount Tire are still there.

Last Sunday I watched the Red Bull world championship were Rhys won. They would be crazy not to sponsor him again. They also showed how he broke his back on the jump kicker with the 4x4 truck and how he plans to do it this year in Vegas for New Years Celebration.
Go Rhys...

Pray he has better luck this time.

Rhys Millen will try to backflip off-road truck on New Year’s Eve
AutoWeek
Still looking for something to do on New Year’s Eve? Consider heading to Las Vegas, where racing star Rhys Millen will try to backflip an off-road truck.
Millen will have to travel a distance of 80 feet at a height of 50 feet to pull it off. Last year, he was planning a similar stunt but overshot the landing in his final practice before the event.
This attempt will take place at the Rio All-Suite Hotel & Casino, as part of an event called “Red Bull: New Year. No Limits.”
Also featured will be Robbie Maddison’s attempt to jump a bike more than 120 feet high and land on top of the 96-foot-tall Arc de Triomphe replica at Paris Las Vegas. He then plans to drop off the landmark and free-fall 50 feet to a landing ramp below.
Maddison set a Guinness world record with a 322-foot motorcycle jump last New Year’s.

I did a post with the New Years Eve info somewhere on here, I think it says Rhys Millen has lost his mind. I sat and talked with Rhys for a long time in Atlanta last May after the accident in December, at that time he did not have full motion in his neck yet, and he still could not run. He was about 85%, and he still went out an won the race. I got to meet his dog, and his then fiance' and now wife too. He is nuts for doing the truck flip again.
Red Bull and all his other sponsors are on board for next year, just not Pontiac, they pulled the plug on Gardella Racing too, no dr5ifting support at all. I believe Mopar has pulled out as well, but Sam Hubinette still has BF Goodrich. not sure if Ford is pulling out or not, but most likely. Vaughan Gitten Jr. will still have Falken.

For those Rhys Millen fans, he will not be back in the Solstice for 2009, he has a new ride and several new sponsors. Two out of three of his big sponsors have backed out of Formula D completly, Pontiac and Bridgestone. He will still be driving for Red Bull, both the Solstice and the GTO are gone.

Thanks lil goat for the up to date on Rhys Millen for 2009. Rhys sure represented GM and all Pontiac owners in top notch form in his Formula D segment. We thank both Rhys and GM for the ride. It was indeed a lot of fun. He has been a powerful force representing GM.
I am sad to see it ending, but at least he will continue with Red Bull, although not in the Solstice. It was a fun ride for all concerned. Thanks Rhys for the memories!
Most sincerely,

He will still be out there but as far as I have heard so far, Ford may be the only American car company in Drifting and they may not even be there. I need to send an email to Vaughan Gitten Jr. and see if Ford is still sponsoring him, I do know he will be back in the Mustang.

do we know what he will be driving this year, or can't it be said now?
-
Yes, I have been sworn to secrecy.
-
It's got to be the new Hyundai coupe.
-
No, no…
It's a retro throwback…
I am thinking a early 70's-era AMC Gremlin X, just 'refreshed' for the 21st Century…

After the commercial on the Super Bowl where Rhys was driving the Hyundai Coupe, the cat is pretty much out of the bag, either that or maybe he will be drifting the Chevelle from Fast and Furious 4!
-
Who would have thought that they could make a Gremlin look worse?
Whats next an Edsel with more chrome?
