Until now, Romania didn't have a circuit and the roads are kind of dangerous, this was my reason to stop riding bikes.
Some passionate guys got together and built a circuit close to capital city, about 30 miles away, is not officially open because they finished only the track (temporary configuration) even so they did a kind of preview this autumn organizing some "private" events for cars and bikes.
Here are some pictures how is it now:
[attach=1]
[attach=2]
[attach=3]
[attach=4]
[attach=5]
Here is the layout:
[attach=6]
There were like 20 cars (Porsche 997 GT3, BMW M3, M4, M5, Miata, RX8, Audi S3, Nissan 350Z, EVOs, etc).
I went there only to learn my car, first 2-3 session I drove with TC full on and the car was jerking, I thought I have issues with spark plugs or ignition but once I put off the TC the car drove very smooth. Also I didn't setup the car especially for this, I drove it with street settings (suspension KW V3, aligment, boost controller off :D doing maximum 15psi only on wastegate spring). I did like 5-6 session of 4-7 laps per session and it was FUUUNNN :tool:
After learning the circuit and the car a little bit, I started to feel a lot of understeer in 2 slow corners where I used 2nd gear, most of the track is in 3rd gear, except 3 corners (4, 10 and 11) and the straight line where I put 4th and I feel like somebody pulled the e-brake :(
I was very happy to see that I'm one of the few cars without issues with brakes, thank you Dave@DDM and all the others on this forum who helped me to choose best parts: J-grooved discs, Porterfield R4S Brake Pads, DDM brained lines and DOT5.1 Motul fluid. The cars stops great and I didn't felt any kind of fading.
Here are some pictures:
[attach=7]
[attach=8]
This time the boxes were for free :D I payed 100Euro ($130) for full day (5-7 sessions)
[attach=9]
I have to learn a lot to drive the Kappa at its potential, I have to learn to setup my car for track day (suspension settings, alignment, tire pressure, etc), I need to learn the track and the lines.
Any suggestions would be more than welcome.
I can't wait the spring for new sessions of track time.
-
Looks like a great track and you are a lucky man to get the chance to learn your car. How long is the track?
-
Elff looks like we are going to have to go back to Romania and help Kelu out, I hope he appreciates all we do for him. GJ you better plan on going too, the ants aren't going to feed themselves.

The final version will have 2.8miles (4.5 km), for the moment is 2.3 miles if I remember correctly.

You are more than welcome, you have to teach GJ how to feed the ants.
Guess who was with me at the track?
Hint: This is actually his wife's car  traded that blue EVO9 which you saw at your gypsy hosts, of course now he regrets it.

Wooo!
T1 looks like T1 at Suzuka. Looks like a decent circuit.
-
Kelu are you saying that's Laura's (hope I remember her name correctly) Audi?
-
Wooo!
T1 looks like T1 at Suzuka. Looks like a decent circuit.
Indeed, it is more than decent circuit for me  I'm still struggling to find best lanes to the following corners:
T1 - very late turning
T2 & T3 - not sure when to step on the gas, when/if to brake or just release gas
T9 - very late turning
T10 - understeers like a pig not matter how I enter in that corner
T11 - a lot of work when getting out of that turn
Kelu are you saying that's Laura's (hope I remember her name correctly) Audi?
You are correct about her name and spelling ;)

Seriously awesome Kelu. That is open to the public there? Did you have to do any training before they let you drive? Safety equipment? Not meant to hijack the thread, but is there someplace in the states where someone can do something similar without having to put in a roll bar? Someplace near Charlotte maybe?
-
Looks like a fun one Kelu! 2.3-2.8 miles is a long track! It's different with an NA so I'm not sure I can be of much help. I was braking later and less than the turbos on the road course.
-

Yeah. We did this at Nationals at Pocono this year. 1 mile road course, but it was enough. All day long. I think I got in 6 or 7 sessions. Three 30 minute sessions in the morning and four 20 minute sessions in the afternoon. Actually, I may have gotten in one more session late in the day.
I plan to join the Miatas again during their 2 day event in July. I need to contact them and make my reservation!

That day was the first "public" track day, almost anyone could come and drive some laps. No training, 1st session was kind of discover the track and it was lead by safety car and overtaking was not allowed but mostly because it was very foggy at that time.
Except helmet and requests not to have leaks and to try not to go out of the track, nothing else. Because it doesn't have sand/grass around the tarmac going out of the track means a lot of downtime because you have to stay put until the trailer comes and picks you up directly from the dirt in order not to bring garbage in the tarmac area.

Yeah, NA is a different animal
I forgot some more pictures:

Also I found an aerial video made 2-3 weeks ago from that track during a bike stage, it gives a better view about the pit area and under construction status of it :D

Kelu were they working on building that when we were there? I seem to remember Kenny or Elff asking about seeing a track when we flew in.

Looks like everywhere around here requires a roll bar in the car - sucks. :gaah:
-

They started working on it on 2012, you flew from NW towards SE and this was 20-30 miles NE from your landing point, depends, could be the one which you saw ;)
Looks like everywhere around here requires a roll bar in the car - sucks. :gaah:
Around here only Time Attack events require rollcage.

GJ does not need lessons on how to feed ants, however, it is a rarity.
I hereby Challenge Kelu, and the other three members of the Wild Hogs to a time trial race at this track in Kelu's car!
-
Kelu you ever hear from Gypsy Joe anymore?
-
Gypsy Joe better watch out... Using my initials and all.
-
GJ does not need lessons on how to feed ants, however, it is a rarity.
See, being a rarity means you are far away from mastering the skill.
I hereby Challenge Kelu, and the other three members of the Wild Hogs to a time trial race at this track in Kelu's car!
Challenge accepted. (Remote driving is not allowed)
Kelu you ever hear from Gypsy Joe anymore?
I talk with him from time to time, seems like he is doing pretty good.
Gypsy Joe better watch out... Using my initials and all.
He might be useful, he knows some romanian, but I wouldn't use that as a leverage
-
His Romanian might not be so good considering how the Romanian girls reacted to him.
-
Wasn't about his romanian .... .. i'm gonna send him the link to this topic :)
-
If only he didn't look like a gypsy.
-
Don't talk to girls at night on the street in any country... lesson learned!
Also, in my defense - I got us to our destination!
-
Seeing that one wave her finger at you was too funny.
How have you been? Survived the "Scotch" or have you even had any?
-
I speak Romanian (Spanish) so I'll be fine.
-
They announced a new track day for the 1st of November :yay: :yay: :yay:
Anybody has any info about good iOS apps for tracking the time with video and position on the track?
-
Oh crap! There is a good one out there. I think Treeman used it at Pocono. May have been for a Droid though.
-
Based on my researches on web I found this: http://www.gps-laptimer.de/Home.html
-
I'm in Las Vegas. Trying to win a trip to Romania.
-
You'd better win 4-5 trips so you can bring wild hogs with you.
-
Good idea Kelu, thanks GJ!
-
No problem. The Wild Hogs Corp is up and running, but in need of investors. Each of the Hogs please send $250 via paypal.
-
Awesome looking track! I would love to get in some time on that. It looks like it would be a lot more challenging than the go-kart track at Lime Rock...
Looks like everywhere around here requires a roll bar in the car - sucks. :gaah:
Try trolling the Miata forum. A lot of those guys like to do track events and lack rollcages, and if their numbers aren't where they need to be they might let you sneak in.
-

You still have time to fly in until 1st of November when it will be the next track day ;)

Challenge Accepted!
The Audi owner is the son of the Hotel Owner.
GYPSY JOE!!! how are you?
DashCommand has a track part.
-
Challenge Accepted!
I think you can fit in his luggage  when are you landing? Alone?
The Audi owner is the son of the Hotel Owner.
Wrong, is your driver, Calin. He swapped his Merc with the Gypsy hotel owner EVO9
DashCommand has a track part.
I already bought the Harry's Lap Timer - GP edition :D
-
And I can fit in the overhead bin.
Aaaa that's right. I forget he swapped cars. Both should have kept the Evo.
-
I've been good! Just working like crazy so I can make the trip back whenever you guys head that way as well ;). Hopefully I won't have to catch a flight back at 5am the next time around.
As for the Romanian moonshine... I finished it atop a Dallas building as per Bogdan's request.

That jug was empty when I shipped it to you! Now if it was the "water" bottle I might believe you.
-
well I refused to drink it from a water bottle so I poured it back into the jug ;)
-
After a day of driving in the mountains with that corn cob "cork" I was surprised there was anything left in the jug.
-
That is awesome.

Things made by elders are always good :D
That is awesome.
:slap: is just a teaser for what you missed
-
I can't believe how drunk I was by 11am on the day of the wedding.
That was the first time I ever had whiskey for breakfast
-

Ever seen anything made by Critter?
I can't believe how drunk I was by 11am on the day of the wedding.

Thanks to Kelu's dad for that one.
-
No shit
and we are not even talking about Critterman's inability to use a tablet or smartphone.
and when in Rom-ania, you do as the Romanians do.
:D
That was an epic 36 hours.
Hell, that was an epic entire trip I'd love to go back.
-
I'm ready to go back!
-
F Yea!!!
-
Does Critter do anything else then driving, riding and supervising?
Just a small idea, you have direct flight from Philly to Brussels, we do some things around here depending on the period:
- July - MotoGP at Assen (including Amsterdam)
- August - F1 (including Brugges)
- any other weekend - Nurburgring (can't say what might include)
After few days in Belgium, we take a low cost flight up to romania (2h) and spend some time there .... with a day at the track.
How that sounds?
-
Sounds good to me.
-
Kelu - What else is there to do? You did forget fishing :)
-
Thats my kind of vacation!

Hah! #'s 2 and 3 in your list (same thing by the way) is what I work on from time to time. Heheheh. Ahhhh.
-
Kelu - What else is there to do? You did forget fishing :)
If you are referring to the that really big fish which I posted on fb last year, that was in Tenerife. If you are referring to fishing in the red areas of some cities, I can't say it here.
I'm in. I've got $78.34 CDN saved up.
Did you finished your house improvements which you started last year?

You are working in the p0rn industry?

Lap times of the 1st session:
1:57:58
1:54:69
1:52:89
1:51:80
I will come back with more photos and more info (surprise)
-
That looked like a lot of fun.

Sweet!

From the same day :)

The car left on its own wheels :D
-
I hope I don't do that while driving Kelu's car....
Kelu- please get upgraded insurance. The Misses has asked that I triple my life insurance before leaving.
-
I hope I don't do that while driving Kelu's car....
For the moment you can't do it ;)
Kelu- please get upgraded insurance. The Misses has asked that I triple my life insurance before leaving.
For my car? I don't like insurance, car insurances don't apply at the track around here because is not a public road. You break it, you pay to fix it because I saw how you fix Kappas
-
I don't know if I can fix a roll over... But, I'll just plasti dip over any dents :)
-
Fixing a roll over is no big deal.
:D
Only takes 30 minutes to fix and hit the next course.
Kelu
That was some really nice progress on each lap. 6 seconds faster on your last lap. Well done!!!
-
The question now is elff. Does he likes this now better than drag racing?.
-
I think he is addicted. Carving through turns gives a rush way more than going straight fast.
-
I think he is addicted. Carving through turns gives a rush way more than going straight fast.
Or slow in Kelu's case.
-
I beat Calin's time from previous track day.
Here are a batch of pictures, let me know if you discover the "surprise" :D
-
smoking tires?
-
close but is not that :D
-
Is Madalina driving? That could explain the improved times too.
-
Is Madalina driving? That could explain the improved times too.
:slap:
-
That was my second guess SA
-
smoking tires?
That's the "I dream of Jeanie" cloud Critter, one of his wishes was to beat Calin's time
-
white-blueish smoke, doesn't ring any bells to you, petrolheads?
-
Did your brakes make like the French and give up?
-
the engine give up :D
The surprise:
Calin after changed his clutch, pressure plate and flywheel, suspension and brakes for track, he didn't reached the track, weird noise coming from clutch/gearbox. When the clutch pedal was pressed the noise was gone so we decided to ditch it about 6 miles away from the track.
Me, in the beginning of the first lap I had some misfires when pushing above 3500rpm, i thought to go to the boxes, but after some turns, it started to work correctly and I push it, in the 5th lap, rough engine working in 3 cyl and huge white-blueish smoke, get out of track slow and huge smoke coming from the exhaust with DTCs of Misfire on cyl 1 and coilpack error.
Hopefully Calin already called for a pickup, he called the guy again to come also with a trailer because we were 2 and we split the costs :D
Here is how I left the track:
[attach=1]
Trailer disconnected to pickup Calin's car from the middle of the nowhere:
[attach=2]
[attach=3]
This way we returned from the track:
[attach=4]
-
Glad you're fixing it before any of us come break it!
-
blow the engine?
-
afirmative
-
How much is a blow job in Romania?
-
GJ if you have to ask...
Kelu are you going to rebuild it or go for the V8? Ship it to DDM and let them take care of it?
-
How much is a blow job in Romania?
Apparently 1 OpelGT engine
:D
-
That is a shame you blew your engine, hope you can get it back working OK soon.
-
That stinks.
What are your thoughts for a rebuild?
-
GJ: you have to be there to ask ... in general like any other thing ... it depends
Kelu are you going to rebuild it or go for the V8? Ship it to DDM and let them take care of it?
My email to Ivy:
PS: Or you can convince David to come to Europe and do a V8 swap? :)))
Her reply:
Dave said if you pay to fly him and the parts over he'll do the V8 install for you :)
That is a shame you blew your engine, hope you can get it back working OK soon.
It's OK, is a fun car, makes me happy
That stinks.
What are your thoughts for a rebuild?
I had worse, for example the stupid Touareg, no fun driving it, blew the engine in germany for no particular reason. Kappa at least had over 500 runs at the strip and over 30 laps at the track doing a lot more power than stock. Please don't ask how much was to fix the Touareg's engine, you will ruin my day, Kappa will be a small fraction of that if I don't go V8.
My thoughts for the moment are to rebuilt the engine with stock parts and to upgrade only the valve springs which is in the list of possible reasons of the damage.
I have almost complete used engine in parts: block, pistons and rods, crank, full head:
http://www.kappaperformance.com/forum/index.php/topic,4803.msg64076.html#msg64076
I plan to buy brand new gaskets, bolts, rings bearings etc (DDM engine build kit). I hope it will not go above 2000 Euro or I'm thinking to buy a brand new LNF engine (waiting for a quote).
It was planned for clutch swap in a couple of weeks, looks like it will be replaced from front and not from the back :D
-
Kelu just send Dave some pictures of how pretty Romania is and he'll figure out how to get there on his own dime.
PS don't send Ivy any of those pictures or things may not go as planed.
