Redline Water Wetter
« on: February 14, 2009, 05:35:19 PM »
This little beast (LadyT's GXP) runs hot, IMO. At the Tail of the Dragon we seen 236 degrees. I was hoping for under $10 to get it to run a few degrees cooler, without going for a $700 radiator to do it.

There are basically 5 products out there claiming to do the job. Redine's Water Wetter, Royal Purple's Purple Ice, DEI's Radiator Relief, Hy-Per Lube's Super Coolant, and Justice Brothers Radiator Cooler.

Redline Water Wetter is also a proven corrosion inhibitor, where RP didn't pass the ASTM D2570 test. Can't say about the others:

The Corvette guys think it's good stuff, also:
http://forums.corvetteforum.com/c6-corvette-general-discussion/1431370-redline-water-wetter-it-works.html

Here is a dyno chart showing comparisons on a 350 V8 by Malcolm Garrett Racing Engines showing an 8 degree reduction in running temps with 50/50 mix w/RWW vs just 50/50 mix. 228 down to 220!

Here is Turbo Magazine's comparison of all 5 brands:
http://www.turbomagazine.com/features/0703_turp_cooling_system_additives/index.html

I just talked myself to put in a bottle of RWW in the Z71 and the Monte Carlo Intimidator SS, also! Just for the corrosion resistance factor. Just put a new radiator in the Olds (Ethyl). Might have to do that, also.

Opinions?

If you run hot, there are other issues than just the type of fluid you use.  Though that product is a good one.  The thermostat is set to pop at 205.  Circulation has been a problem in these cars due to improper bleeding if the air in the coolant system.   I have a post here http://kappaperformance.com/forum/index.php?topic=733.0 describing the fix...  BTW, in the 41000+ miles I've never gone above 207.  I've done the complete Smoky Mountain and Skyline drives.

Agree have done the Dragon in June and well and all the other mountain roads I could find in Va, NC,  Md, and Del -- don't get 45K miles in 20 months and the worst I have ever seen was 207 -- stuck in traffic in DC!

Thanks, I'll have to try to "burp" the system, but as I'm about to flush the coolant on the Monte and the Z71, I'm going to add the RWW to the coolant.

I used water wetter on my roadrace motorcycles and highly modified GSXR and it always worked great. Never an over or high temp condition.

Redline Water Wetter really IS an effective product. HOW effective is a matter of what it is in. Corrosion prevention in a Kappa engine may not be an issue (I believe it is all aluminum). All that said, if the OP's car is getting up to 230deg+ there is something else going on. With over 30K miles on the car it may be worthwhile to make sure that the fan is cycling when if should AND give the radiator an external "bath" to assure that it is not packed up with dirt and "schmutz".

I have the Redline in the Solstice but I seem to remember reading somewhere it works better with the old green anti-freeze than the red Dexycool. I still use it in the Solstice and my truck (both red anti-freeze).

I put it in my 07 GXP some time ago (during the Summer) and I monitor my engine temp quite closely. I put it in for any assist it might give (temp reduction and/or corrosion prevention) but not in response to any problem I was having. I haven't detected lower readings since adding it and I was watching very closely right after adding. Still glad it's in there though. -bird

Water wetter is great stuff but it works best ...and was mainly intended to be used... with plain water.  It can also be used with all types of antifreeze to improve heat transfer but again not as effect as when used with plain H2O.  I have it in my Solstice just because it helps to improve the heat transfer.  But I doubt that you will see much if any cooler temperatures when used with antifreeze.  Sounds like you may have other issues.
