No muffler system cause engine surge?
« on: August 11, 2010, 07:44:43 PM »
OK, question for all you smart mechanical types.  While at the dealership getting my aft O2 sensor replaced (only 12,000 on car)the service rep comes out and said he notices I do not have a muffler (I've got the Solo Street Race).  He goes on to tell me that the tech said that by running no muffler that it will cause engine surges.  Is this true?  Has anyone heard of this before?  Thanks.

Quick answer, no.  Any modifications to the exhaust post O2 sensors cannot really harm anything.

Boost creep is a possibility with a free flowing exhaust, but our wastegate doesn't seem to have that issue.

I do know that some engines run into trouble when there is too little back pressure...however since you have a stock cat (or else why did they replace the O2 sensor) I highly doubt you'll have any issue from lack of back pressure.

Thanks all for the info.  They replaced the O2 sensor because I got a CEL and code P0141.

Since P0141 is "O2 Sensor Heater Circuit Malfunction (Bank 1, Sensor 2)", it would make sense that they would go after (probably/hopefully) the downstream O2 sensor. We guess you'll know soon enough, huh?

BTW, engine surge issues due to too low back pressure really is a normally aspirated engines, not turbos, as the turbo itself creates enough back pressure, even without a cat.
