Resonator Removal
« on: November 19, 2010, 03:29:27 PM »
I have heard that the Engine Air Intake Resonator can be removed on a 2.4L without going to a CAI.  I am making final preparations to install the LV Brace and it will require this piece to be removed. I have seen the installation thread and the spray can cap seems like an interesting idea, but I think a more permanent filler would be in order.

Has anyone done this effectively and what was used to plug the resonator hole permanently. I was thinking of going with a pvc cap and clamp or some other permanent installation.

I find it hard to believe after 4 years that someone hasn't removed this "can" due to it's gawdy looking nature.

Are there any known performance effects from removing it? Dave, Randy, Critter, or Joe any idea?

The final idea here is to go S/C in the relatively near future, but would also like to enjoy my LV brace in the meantime.

I used the stainless steel cap( it is actually an accent covers the bottom of the plastic soap dispensing bottle at Walmart) about $7.00 for the package, the package contains 2 items, and they may not be the same. I destroyed one and still have one for the soap. It's a perfect fit. Also I used the existing clamp for the job.

No performance gains just some noise.  An enterprising sailor should be able to find a damage control plug that would fit, and then cut it to fit :)

:urock:Thanks for the ideas. Probably going with the PVC cap for a solution. I have some time to measure the exact size. Maybe I will ask some friends at work who work in the sheet metal shop to make me a piece to fill the hole.

Yes I am a bubblehead. A submariner. Just not below a marine...

Agreed, that without the Supply Corp portion of the Navy, ship's would not get fixed or be able to goto sea. But without engineering and electricians in particular...

You'd still be working by oil lights like they were when you joined Critter.  So what was it like to serve on Old Ironsides?

Don't need electritians when you have coal lamps and a fair wind.  Back in the day when ships were wood and men iron.  Everyone knows ships are made so sail on the sea not sink.  Sinking is bad.

Critter - the target

Jeromy I was actually stationed on a wooden ship, a minesweeper  :)

HA HA HA!!! Critter, you kill me man...

Well, spent a day at 2kwk4u's and took a hard look a the engine and resonator. I actually think the spray can cap is actually the best option for closing the hole...

Strange but I think it may actually work the best.

More to follow when I do this install and I will provide pics...

I did some research on the BB from back in '07 and found that quite a few people did what they used to affectionately call the "Mallet" upgrade.

Similar to what Critter suggested, a cut piece of wood used to plug a hole in a pipe in a ship...

Puchase the properly sized rubber mallet. Cut the head off, sand or grind down to make it fit in the hole, and then retighten the hose clamp.

This is a great idea! Never thought of the use of a rubber mallet head. Maybe I will do pictures and such for a sticky of the mallet mod...

Well the "mallet" installation is complete! I have forwarded all the pics to my private e-mail and will upload tomorrow while at work.  I am going to start a new thread for the resonator removal with full description on how to do it.

The car sounds the same and does not preform any differently. I was actually amazed that the intake resonator basically serves no purpose other than filling up engine comparment space.

BTW, I did actually use a rubber mallet bought from Lowe's. Cut to size and put into the hole. Worked great. The other idea would be a trimmed down hockey puck.

More tomorrow!
